setting default programs - Accidentally set Internet Explorer to open files and folders

I plugged in a data stick

It prompted me to choose which folder to view files. I forgot to uncheck the box that says to use that folder to open all file

I inadvertently chose internet explorer

everytime I go to open folders or files a box opens up entitled "view and track downloads"

It gives you the option to run or save

When you click on either one, the file comes up as a exe. file

No matter what I choose, I can't access the file.

Also in another area it says Network Access Protection is off and I don't know how to turn it on

It seems you have two options to set what program (such as Internet Explorer) opens a given file type:

  • If you know the file type (extension) you are having trouble with, open the Control Panel, search for "Default Programs", click in "Default Programs", then in "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program". From there, you can change program associations per file type (extension).
  • To tell Window what file types Internet Explorer should open or not, open the Control Panel, search for "Default Programs", click in "Default Programs", then in "Set your Default Programs". In the left pane, click in "Internet Explorer", then in "Choose defaults for this program", then finally check or uncheck the file types that you want to have associated with IE or not.
