Canon Toolbox 4.9 not working with Windows 7(x64) Professional

I received my new computer and went through the process of installing the drivers and software for my Canon MF4270.  I downloaded the software directly from the Canon web site to ensure that I had the current drivers and software.  I can print and fax from my computer but I am unable to access the scan feature from the Canon Toolbox v4.9.  I am able to launch Windows Fax and Scan and utilize the scanner.  Based on the fact that the computer can interface with the scanner, I contacted Canon Tech Support.  After working the issue with them for about 40 minutes, they referred me to Microsoft to find a resolution.  I have attempted to shift the compatability mode for the executable (MTFBOX.EXE) and still cannot get the Toolbox software to access the scanner.  Is there a solution for this or am I simply out of luck?

    Hi,

We need to make sure a certain folder path is in your path environment variable.

Let us determine the correct path to add into the Path environment variable.  Look in C:\Windows\twain_32 and there should one other folder in there.  For example the folder name should be CNQ4803.

This is the path that is needed to be added into the path environment variable.

    C:\Windows\twain_32\CNQ4803

Now, follow these instructions to get to the dialog to modify the path environment variable.

a.Control Panel > System > and then choose Advanced System Settingsin the left hand column.

    b. This will bring up the System Propertiesdialog (it should already be on the Advancedtab).

    c. At the bottom of this dialog is an Environment variablesbutton.  Clicking this button will bring up the Environment variables dialog.

    d. In the bottom panel, scroll until you find the variable named path.  Select this one and then hit the Edit button to bring up the Edit System variable dialog.

    e. In the Variable value text box, scroll all the way to the right and then add in the path C:\Windows\twain_32\CNQ4803that was determined earlier.  Make sure to separate this value with a preceding semi-colon.  And also be careful not to make any other changes to this value.

Now click on OK and check if it works.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to contact Canon support for more information:

    Hope this helps.

I found editing the PATH variable worked.  see http://weblogs.asp.net/jeffwids/canon-scanner-unable-to-open-twain-source

Many thanks.  The path not being identified under the environment variables was the problem.  This must be a failure with ToolBox installer.

However, one note with step "e" above; I did not immediately key on the "add in the path" statement.  I didn eventually figure out that it needed to be under the "Path" variable identified in "System variables" section.

Well, that got me one step closer. The "Scan" window now opens when I select one of the buttons from the "CanoScan Toolbox" window. However, when I click on "Scan" a "Select Source" window opens up wanting me to select one of the following two sources:

    • Canon MF4200 Series 11.3(32-32)
    • WIA-Canon MF4200 Series 1.0(32-32)

Regardless, of which one I select, I receive the same error: "Unable to select TWAIN source."

I went back to the "CanoScan Toolbox" and selected "Settings" to see if there was something missing. In the drop down box for "Select Scanner", there are no available options for me to select. So it appears that the CanoScan software sees the scanner but can't communicate with it?

Also, at the printer, I pressed the "Scan" button, then the "Start" button to see if I could get it to scan that way. When I did this, a "Canon MF4200 Series" window popped up on my computer asking me to "Select the program to launch for this action." This also had no available options for me to select. I went through the files in the CanoScan directory and looked for possible configuration strings that might have been missing and saw nothing. I did open the registry and there are areas that could be missing data, but I decided to come back to you for advice. At this point since the CanoScan Toolbox software seems able to communicate with the scanner, is it a configuration setting issue somewhere?

Thank you for the assistance so far.
