Why does my computer alternate between the 64 bit and x86?

My new laptop came loaded w/ Windows 7.  Peridocally, when I pull-up Task Manager I'll see thats its operating either 64 bit or x86.The switch seems to be random and is not anything (intentionally) done by me. Ive had this computer for about a month now and I've been the only user. Just started seeing this aboit 2 wks ago.

Why does my computer alternate between the 64 bit and x86? And who/what is making the change?  Is there any reason for me to be concerned about the computer's health or security? If so, please advise. Please be heavy w/ the details

Thanks for the help!!!

IE 32 bit has the broadest compatability because of many available add ins while IE 64 offers some better security in part because of fewer available add ins.

Some add ins (like Plugins and Toolbars) are only available in 32 bit versions and will not work in 64 bit IE. Some are available in both x86and x64 and automatically install in both IE x86 and IE x64 by running one installer. Other addins have separate installers for x86 and x64 and need to be run separatly.

If you click on the Start Menu and the choose All Programs you should see in the list "Internet Explorer (64 bit)" and "Internet Explorer" which is the 32 bit version

    Hope this helps

    Lead3 is correct.

You are running Windows 7 64 bit is you are ever seeing any 64 bit programs running. The applications can be either 64 bit (also known as x64 or AMD64) or 32 bit (AKA x32 or x86)

A 64 bit version of Windows can run either 32 bit or 64 bit applications. A 32 bit version of Windows can only run 32 bit applications.

You can check the actual system type you are running by right clicking on Computer and selecting Properties. In the window that pops up you will see a section titled System that has listings for Rating, Processor, Installed Memory (RAM), Systems Type, and Penand Touch. The System Type will tell you if you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows installed.

    Hope this helps

If it doesn't say *32, it is a 64 bit process.

What you are seeing is normal for Windows 7 x64.

There are two versions of Internet explorer included in Windows 7 x64.

One is the 32 bit version and the other is 64 bit.

The 32 bit version is the default.

I think what you are seeing is your 64 bit system running some 32 bit applications. Not all applications are 64 bit and Windows x64 is able to run both 32 (x86) and 64.

What are you seeing that makes you believe it is switching?

And where are you seeing 64bit or x86 in task manager?
