unable to play .avi files in Windows Media Player.

Actual Title: Media Player

I am not a IT or Geek expert, I am very basic computer user and have a problem that I have spend almost 4 days on trying to over come it myself.

I have one of those Car Video Camera's that sits on the front screen that takes AVI  and JPeg files

The computer I use is a Windows 7 /64 bit, I have no problems seeing the Jpeg files on my computer BUT the problem comes with the AVI files, they are shown in a green fluro picture, I have run update to both MS/Windows/Office and Navida etc. but nothing works to bring it to a normal "movies" coloring.

Here is the CRAZY part, my wife has the EXACT same computer and it shows the AVI file OK, my MSI laptop with XP  also shows the files OK ( it is on a SD card)  and so it comes back to my own computer..........the crazy part is this computer is the only one of the 3 that gets all the updates automatically !!

I have read to dowload this or that player and it will resovle the issue however I want to use Media Player and as I have the same as the others I want this computer to operate the same as the others...........any help please would be very welcome

I/we do not operate any software that is not orignal or not registered if that helps

Hi as mentioned I am no geeek and some of this info is way beyond my abilty, I have followed one link and copy and pasted the info because it said someone with tech knowledge would be able to help.........hope this makes sense to someone...........what I did also read it said that "some Windows may have a issue and others dont" GREAT if you have paid and support geniune software and you still need to be a tech to work out a problem that should be fixed by MS..........

if you could help I would be grateful......it appears nowhere that it as a AVI codec unless they have a different name ????

    many thanks

    Hi,

    1. Have you made any changes prior to this issue?
    2. Do you receive any error message while trying to play the videos?
    3. Is the issue confined only with .avi files?
    4. What is the version of Windows Media Player installed on your computer?

Follow the methods in the links mentioned below and check if the issue still persists.

Method 1: Troubleshoot problems in Windows Media Player

Method 2: Windows Media Player 12 does not play some AVI files that were created by a third-party and that include an AVI super index chunk correctly in Windows 7

    Hope this information helps.

Hi, Yes I tried the hot fix albeit it says it can be harmful and nothing changed,I also ent to the list /link you suggested and spent many hours trying to work my way thru it even if I thought it was not needed and no changes, what I did do is downlown Quick player ( I hate Apple stuff) and if I ask the file to open with that it works fine !!!!...................it must be a MS software problem then I think
