Lock computer on lid close?

Is Microsoft ever going to include the "lock computer" option as a close lid action in their operating systems? The only current options are "do nothing", "shut down", "hibernate" and "sleep". People have been asking for this for years. It's very easy to do in Linux. Why can't Microsoft accomplish this?

  1. Go to regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Power
  2. Right click > New > DWORD (32 bits)
  3. Rename it to AwayModeEnabled
  4. Select it > Right click > Change value to 1 (Hexadecimal)
  5. Go to the Power Options settings page and change the lid close action to sleep.

That worked for me!

I would also very much like to see this feature as it a potential security lifesaver.

I'm unlikely to know if my laptop's about to be stolen, so I don't lock it every time I get up from my desk. I have my machine configured to require a password when returning from screensaver but this means all a potential thief has to do is keep the laptop awake and they can get at all my data, even if the entire drive is encrypted.

I can't configure the laptop to sleep when the lid is closed as I often need to keep processes running when the lid is down.

The easiest and most user-friendly thing would be to shut the laptop lid when leaving my desk and know that if the laptop gets stolen its content can't be accessed.

This feature was in XP and was really useful. I guess this is another irritating change Microsoft made with no reason other than 'simplifying' the UI.

I had same problem after I got windows 7. None of my 4 laptops had any option to do this. nothing included from Microsoft or the vendors of my laptops.

My requirement was simple, I wanted to keep my apps running but get the screen secured when I close lid. I did not want to get into sleep mode as this blocked my downloads and my running music. Also, I was lazy enough that I declined to use win+L before closing the lid. All I wanted was close the lid and get it locked automatically.

When I could not find anything, I had to do it myself. Please look at http://akhaliq.com/?p=198.
