ICACLS - invalid parameter system:f

I've beeen trying to do the icacls on the command  prompt fllowing a backup failure because the system did not have access to a volume.  I have entered the command icacls c:/grant system:f but all I'm getting is "invalid parameter system :f". Any help is much appreciated.
