windows exporer launching web browser for search

im using windows 7 32 bit with all current updates. if i type a file/folder name that doesnt exist into the windows explorer address bar my default web browser is automatically opened and tries to open it as a web site. i could sort of understand this behavior if i was typing http:// but not every time i type something wrong. also the other really annoying thing is lets say i right click on 'Program Files' and select 'Copy as path' explorer copies "C:\Program Files" with quotes. now i paste "C:\Program Files" the exact format explorer provided and it launches my web browser. really microsoft? why you cant use quotes for files/folder in explorer is beyond me.

if i type 'c' in the address bar windows changes it too 'http://c/' and tries to open the web site in my browser. if i type in '\c' i get the msgbox "Windows can't find '\c'. Check the spelling and try again." this is what i want EVERY TIME. windows explorer should NEVER automatically open a web browser. if for some odd reason you did want this option you can click the little 'Search for' option in the drop down menu. ive tried searching with every phrase i can think of but i cant find any info on how to turn this off and i cant even find anyone else complaining about it. i cant be the only person this annoys.

between this behavior and when in windows search and selecting 'open in a new window' and then clicking in the address bar and getting something click this 'search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20Local%20Disk%20(C%3A)&crumb=location:C%3A%5C\Program Files'. right clicking and selecting either of the 'Copy address' options are not any better. so if you just want to go up one folder you have to start opening new windows and copy and pasting which is ridiculous. i cant understand how microsoft can screw something up that bad especially when it worked fine in xp. if i wanted to search for a web site id open the browser myself. this is such an annoyance.

thanks

    Hello jonjonjonj,

Go to Start and then select Default Programs.

Click on Set Associations for a program.

    Scroll to Windows Search .

There you can set the default program on what you want to open Windows Search.

By default it should be set to Windows Explorer.

    Hope this helps.

    Marilyn

I don't care if this tone is too harsh for you, but it is obvious that none of the people that made a pitiful attempt to answer this question came close to understanding what the question was asking.  I am having the same problems and the answers are way off the mark.

Once I find the folder I want using the Search, I want to open that folder and then have the standard path show up in the address bar, NOT the “search-ms:displayname=Search%20…..” garbage that is there instead.

Right clicking on the search results and selecting “Open folder location” does not work for all situations.  It is also quite cumbersome when it does work.  If I open the folder from the Search Results, the “Open folder location” option is no longer available, but the “search-ms:displayname=Search%20…..” garbage is still clogging up the path.

This should be an option that you can turn off, or set the default be to “Open folder location” whenever the path is in clogged by the “search-ms:displayname=Search%20…..” garbage.

Side note: why can I not select “NO” to the question “Was this helpful?” for each answer?  Is this some kind of Marketing/PR BS?  This is asinine.

    Hi,

    1. Were there any changes made in the Computer prior to this issue?
    2. Does this issue persist in the Safe Mode?

Perform the following methods and check if it helps:

    Method 1:

Try deleting the temporary files in the Computer using the Disk Cleanup option and check if it helps. Refer to the following article to do the same:

    Delete files using Disk Cleanup

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanup

    Method 2:

Step 1: I would suggest you to boot in safe mode with networking and check if you face the same issue.

To boot into safe mode refer to the link provided below:

    a)     Restart the computer.

    b)     Start tapping the F8 key.

    c)      You will get advanced boot option window.

d)****Select the option “Safe mode with Networking”

Refer to the link provided below for more information on safe mode:

**Step 2:**I would recommend you to place the computer in clean boot and then check if the issue persists.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Note: ****After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

If the issue doesn’t persists when the Computer is in clean boot or while in the Safe Mode with Networking, then the issue is confirmed to be caused by a certain non-Microsoft applications.

    Method 3:

Viruses are also known to cause these kinds of issues. Please scan your computer from Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

    Hope this information is useful.
