Unable to share printer - errors 0x000006d9, 0x80070424, 2147023143

I am trying to share a printer. I have a Desktop running Windows Home Premium and am trying to share with a laptop also running Windows Home Premium. Both have Microsoft Security Essentials (and have never used any other anti-virus software.) We have a wireless network for the internet and use the Home Group settings and can share files. At one time we could share the printer.

(Desktop is two years old, the laptop is one year old)

Two things have happened lately that may have contributed to this problem.

#1 – I added a laptop running Vista to the wireless network to access the internet.

#2 – My old printer (HP 1500) died and I replaced it with an old HP HPS 1310.

I am not sure at what point the printer-sharing quit working.

I go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > change advanced sharing settings > Home or Work > click on TURN ON network discovery, file & printer sharing, SAVE settings. When I go back in network discovery, file & printer sharing is TURNED OFF.

When I go to Control Panel > Devices & Printers > right click on printer > click on Printer Properties > click on sharing > click on change sharing options > click share this printer > click APPLY, I get this message:  "Printer Settings could not be saved.  Operation could not be completed.  error0x000006d9".

The help forums then lead me to changing settings on my Windows Firewall.

However, when I go there, I get this message:  "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x80070424"

“When I go to services”, the Windows Firewall does not appear.

I have researched these errors and found many conversations related to them.   I have followed many suggestions but I can’t fix it.

During this three day ordeal I have ran across this message relating to Home Group:  "Specific Error 2147023143".

I really have no idea in what direction to go. My husband wants to buy a new printer but I don’t think that will solve the problem.

What would you suggest I do ? Get a new Printer, ask for your help in resolving these errors, or ask for your help in restoring back to factory settings, ?

Thank you.        & HAPPY EASTER!

    Hi,

Which security software is installed in your computer?

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Follow the steps for Windows firewall service and check if it helps.

Error Code 0x80070424 with Windows Firewall and "Base Filtering Engine Service" Not available in services database list:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2011/12/27/error-code-0x80070424-with-windows-firewall-and-quot-base-filtering-engine-service-quot-not-available-in-services-database-list.aspx

    Method 2:

Try the steps provided in the following Microsoft article and check if you are able to share the printer.

Error 0x000006D9 when you try to share a printer on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2123653

    Hope the information is helpful.

OK -    So I followed the instructions in Method 1  (as I held my breath because I had never done that sort of thing before).

Everything seemed to go ok until I got to the very last line:  "start base filtering engine service and then windows firewall service"

When I tried to start the base filtering engine service, I got this message:

"Windows could not start Base Filtering Service on Local Computer.   Error 5. Access is denied.

When I tried to start the windows firewall service, I got this message:

"Windows could not start the windows firewall service on local computer.   Error 1068.  The dependency service of group failed to start."

(I also tried to "run as administrator"  and got the same results.)

    The Good News:

    1.  The Windows Firewall DOES now show up in services.

    2.  When I go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center, the Network Discovery is staying turned on.  So does the File & Printer Sharing.

    The Bad News:

    1.   When I try to "share the printer" in Control Panel, I still get the message:  "Printer settings could not be saved.  Operation could not be completed.  Error 0x000006d9)"

    2.  When I try to change settings on Windows Firewall in the advanced settings I still get the same message:  "Windows Firewall can not change some of your settings.   Error 0x80070424."

I don't know if I am back at where I started or if I am somewhere else.   At any rate, I'm listening if anybody has more help.       Thanks.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on both computers.   They came with a free trial of something else (?) but I un-installed it and put MSE on before they were used.

Thanks for the prompt reply.    I'll be back to work on it when our great-grandson has finished hunting eggs.
