Multiple Malware/Antivirus Scanners Causing Performance Loss?
I have lately had generally lower performance from my PC, and i noticed this...
I have my Firewall correctly set up, but i have all of these installed:
1.Avast Antivirus (Some person who worked on my familys PC installed the free version, I Don't like it that much or depend on it)
Which has these features of "Real-Time Shields":
File System Shield, Mail Shield, Web Shield, P2P Shield, IM Shield, Network Shield, Script Shield, Behavior Shield.
(They Stay Active even if you uncheck to scan, only stop when i click "Disable for 1 Hour", which causes it to get alarmed and show exclamation messages of the shield not being on. I think that lowers my performance). Also, the only IM program i use is Skype, and my only P2P is uTorrent. I always exit uttorent or skype when it isnt needed
- Advanced Systemcare 5 (Full Version): Auto Updates, Auto increases my performance (i like that), and can scan for malware, fix my registry/ect while the system is idle, and has tons of other helpful tools i can use when i want. I LOVE THIS PROGRAM, its more helpfull than Avast, but i dont know what to do about Avast.
- Smart Defrag (Component of Advanced Systemcare): Automatic Defragment of the Hard Drive "C:" when it shows that it is "Idle":
The checked settings reccomended are to:
A. Start Auto Defrag when the system idle exceeds 5 minutes
B.Pause Auto Defrag when resource usage exceeds 60%
- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (Doesnt seem to activate at windows startup):
Scans Malware, i don't think it does automatically, but i am not sure
- AVG Free (Doesnt make any sense, i thought it was uninstalled... Still has stuff on pc or empty folders)
I want:
- Less performance issues on PC
- Any way to keep avast from overscanning or confirm it is that way-the "Shields" are always on, even when it isnt checked to scan the areas
- Keep Advanced Systemcare (Way more convenient and helpful)

2012-04-02T23:59:03+00:00 At the very minimum, I recommend you do the following:
- Run AVG Remover, which may be downloaded from here:
http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
- Download the installation file for either MSE (free) or the FREE version of Avira Antivirus:
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
OR
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials
(Both of these programs have very good reputations AND they are very light in using resources. I believe Avira is the lighter of the two.)
- Download the Avast Uninstall Utility form here:
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
- Disconnect form the Internet.
- Uninstall Avast the usual way.
- For good measure, run the Avast Uninstall Utility you already downloaded.
- Here's the deal. You know my position on Advanced System Care. I think it is a waste of money and can have detrimental impact on a system. It is your choice to leave it if you wish. If it were ME, I would definitely uninstall it. Actually, why don't you do that? You can always reinstall it at a later time if you want to (again, it is not recommended!!!!!!).
In the event that you don't uninstall it, you might need to DISABLE it so that when it is time to install Avira or MSE, it won't get in the way!
- Install Avira or MSE.
- Re-connect to the Internet and update the definitions of Avira or MSE.
- Report back.
EDIT: I don't believe you ever indicated whether or not Windows Search 4.0 (KB940157) is installed. It is known wrecker of systems! If you have it, unsintall it!!!!! For more info:

2012-04-02T23:03:41+00:00 I put some new info in six small numbered sections.
and scroll down to "ANSWERS TO SOME QUESTIONS" for responses to your important questions. Lastly, after that is some statistics
- Avast New Info- I have spent the last two weeks working on improving avast... Changing settings, exluding paths, turning on "Silent/Gaming" Mode, and nothing seems to really help.
My family cannot afford a new pc, They bought my Brother+Sister new high performance
laptops for collage.
- Only PC- So this, Outdated XP is my only option haha. Found out how to check hard drive names
and the one it has is a 2001 Discontinued... They put that one in around 9 or 10 months ago
after our last needed maintenance.
- Unnecesary Services- I think they're may be a few unnecesary "Services" for my computer, I guess you can tell meif that affects performance.
I found one yesterday for "Microsoft Office " Programs, such programs which were removedfrom the PC whenever they changed the Drive. Also saw one for a network thing, when there is no other comps on my network anymore, for about the past year or two. If you have any Links/Ideas for services, please post them :P
- Unknown Application List -the PC was able export a list from my computer, it calls it "Application List".
I Don't know about these:
Otto??
Data Fax SoftModem with SmartCP (our printer doesnt work anyway, and we dont fax)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Security Update (What is .NET Framework anyway? i dont use it im pretty sure)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (I think that has something to do with Multi-Comp Networks? if so i dont need it, only one pc on network)
OpenAL?
Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin (I Uninstalled Firefox WTF lol)
Nero 7 Essentials??
- A Program Won't Uninstall:
a trial i downloaded once for "Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11" seems like it
will not uninstall..
it shows a message, then the uninstall progress meter goes
BACKWARDS! It basically does the opposite of what it is supposed to lol. Only have
this program doing stuff like that.
- Java Question- I know I have old updates from Java, and if i remember, they reccomend you uninstall all outdated plugins/versions of Java? i guess it might be a good idea.
ANSWERS TO SOME QUESTIONS
- RAM on Task Manager "Commit Charge (K)":
some numbers are changing before i can copy them, but at least i know the
numbers in each part RIGHT NOW
Total:1037248
Limit: 4032304
Peak: 1386088
I dont know if the amount of/ usage of the processes in Task Manager affect the numbers,
but if they do and u want to know, just ask.
- Hard Drive At DMA or PIO:
It shows 2 "Primary IDE Channels" the manufacturer is Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Primary Channel 1: Device 0 says DMA if available, and Current is "Ultra DMA Mode 5". Device 1 is Not Applicable.
Primary Channel 2: Device 0 says DMA if available, and Current is "Ultra DMA Mode 2". Device 1 says DMA if available, and Current is "Ultra DMA Mode 2"

2012-04-02T13:34:57+00:00 Nice report! :-) Which program gave you this information?
The good news is you have enough RAM. You also have enough free hard drive space.
Now address the other issues I mentioned and let us know.
By the way, when I ran Avast, I would turn off the mail scanning since it was unneeded and potentially a performance drag. For more discussion on configuring Avast and its "shields":
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=216228
Your issue MIGHT be due to Avast. There have been Avast users that have complained about performance issues.
In the event you decide to uninstall Avast, the following links should help:

http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus (for the FREE version of Avira)
OR
