CD/DVD drive won't read disks windows 7

hello

I had reinstalled windows 7 32 bit on my Fujitsu Siemens laptop for about 6-7 months ago since i had built a PC and just wanted to the laptop to take out n about and wanted a fresh start, i haven't had a single problem not had many problems in all the years i have had win 7 on my laptop then all of a sudden my disc drive stopped reading discs i have tried about 10 different discs and its not picking them up just keeps asking me to insert a disc, the drive shows when i click My Computer and in device manager. 1st i tried to do a system restore to a few days before this problem started with no luck.

I decided to see if it would run my wondows 7 disc when it booted but it just kept on loading as normal to the desktop i checked my BIOS to make sure that the disc drive was 1st which it was tried pressing F12 to select the disc drive in the boot options as it loaded but it still kept loading to desktop.

i have run Fix it which didn't work came back with http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal/fixit/details/200/14f0561e-5a9b-4ef9-9305-77130c3d6392 i have ran Fix it about 4 times with different Discs and it always comes back the same every time.

I have tried googling my problem and couldn't find any think that worked, not that there was much anyway mostly people saying to uninstall your drivers which i did and it didn't work.

I know what the staff here that look at the forums is like and i know they will just CnP this and call it a day.

  1. Click Start

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then clickregedit in the Programs list.

Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or clickContinue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2**. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM**. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

The problem is that the Upper and Lower Filters DO NOT exist i have uninstalled the Drivers and rebooted which did nothing, filters are still nonexistent. Found a video on youtube also telling me to delete the upper and lower filters but also to delete them in **HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}**and ControlSet002 but still no sign of the elusive filters to delete.

No virus is present according to AVG

The only thing i haven't tried is updating my BIOS which i found seems to of helped some people, i will try this after i have finished typing this.

    Hi,

    You need to try to boot to a Windows or Linux disk as I indicated. Do not assume that

    it will not boot just because it will not read a disk while working in Windows. If it does

    NOT boot to a boot disk then you are wasting your time trying to resolve the issues

    with software methods. If it will boot to a boot disk then you "might" be able to resolve

    the issues with software methods.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

    If the drive is viable this troubleshooter might help :

    Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

    Start - type in Search box -  CMD      find at top of list -  RIGHT CLICK  -  RUN AS ADMIN

    sfc /scannow

    How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

    Then run checkdisk (chkdsk).

    How to Run Disk Check in Windows 7

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

    ==========================================================

    After the above :

    References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.

    Stage 1 : Please do all the below even if you have done some before as it is often the total

    process which solves the issue.

    Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab -

    click Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL -

    REBOOT this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if drive is not shown continuebelow.

    Then work your way through these - remember the drive could be bad, could have a loose

    cable or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

    Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then check cables in both

    ends. Remove and replace, do not just snug. For laptops you can often clean the power and

    data contacts with a pencil eraser.

    Some DVD drives do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the System maker and

    device maker to see if there is firmware or drivers for you drive if needed.

    ===============================

    Stage 2 : You could have drive issues as the CD/DVD is actually 4 drives in 1 case ( CD & DVD

    burn and CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 parts to not function while the others

    do so properly.

    Did you complete the troubleshooter for the drive that still does not work? There are some

    registry entries that the troubleshooter does not fix and those "might" be the cause.

    Check with your System Maker and Device maker for both possible firmware updates and the

    correct Registry entries for your drive.

    These are the keys I think are the ones in question - for the CD/DVD drive sub-keys of course

    as there will other sub-keys in these keys. Be sure to ask for specific keys involved as well as

    the settings.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    You probably can find more info here and maybe even the exact registry settings for your

    CD/DVD drive from someone with the same model.

    Forums - a lot of real expert help

    http://club.myce.com/

    CD/DVD units

    http://www.myce.com/storage/

    Use DevManView to locate CD/DVD in registry (be careful and make a Restore Point before

    changing anything) - find the device in DevManView and then Right Click on it Open in RegEdit.

    DevManView - Free - an alternative to the standard Device Manager of Windows, which displays

    all devices and their properties in flat table, instead of tree viewer

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

    Sounds like the drive may have developed a hardware issue. Check with Fujitsu Support, their on-line

    documentation, and diagnostics.

    http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/

    Fujitsu Support (Outside Asia Pacific Area)

    http://www.fujitsu.com/sg/products/pc/support/service/warranty_int.html

    ===============================

    Try this to see if the drive is viable at all.

    Setup/Settings (BIOS/CMOS) often F2 so watch the screen as you boot - set the boot

    order to CD/DVD first. Remember to set it back when done.

    Try booting to a Windows 7 Repair and/or Installation disk, and or a Linux boot disk.

    If the drive will not boot to these then it has failed or there are other hardware issues

    affecting it. However even it does boot that does not mean there are not some possible

    hardware issues affect the drive's other functions.

    Thx for such a quick reply do appreciate it.

    While i might not of been right about what you would CnP but i knew you would still CnP some think that i have already found and tried or was irrelevant, most of your 1st post is N/A since the discs aren't being picked up during boot so a boot disc of any kind won't work, i checked my BIOS as stated, i had updated my firmwire and BIOS off the Fujitsu website after making this post with no luck.

    Just tried sfc /scannow and chkdsk, no problems were found, ran sfc /scannow 4 times as it says to try it a few time in he post you linked with it.

    Had already tried uninstalling the drivers, no luck.

    Most of them links either wasn't the problems im having or just send you to Mr Fix it which i already said didn't work.
