Windows live mail not responding.

For the last 2 weeks windows live mail does not always work on my laptop.  When I open live mail I get the blue spinning circle and it says live mail not responding but sometimes it works.  I can get live mail to work on other computers on the same home network.  I have looked for answers online and have found it might be a windows update that is causing problems.  But I cannot find this update to delete it.  I took laptop to Best Buy and showed the geek squad guy what was going on(blue circle and mail not responding message).  He told me to delete and reinstall live mail.  I have done this twice but live mail still does not work.  Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

    Hi,

For investigation, we need more information from you.

    • What is the exact error message you are encountering?
    • Have you made any changes to your Windows Live Mail or laptop before you encountered this problem?
    • Does your Windows Live Mail crash after not responding?
    • What is the Operating System of your laptop?

    Thanks!

To rule out any problem with authentication, try this:

    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Press Alt-F W to set IE to Work offline
    3. Launch Windows Live Mail

If this helps, you may be having trouble with signing in to Windows Live. In WLMail, press Ctrl-Shift-O for Options. On the Connection tab, click Stop signing in.

While you're at it, on the Advanced tab, click Maintenance. At the foot of the page, ensure that all the logging options are enabled. This will gather data for expert analysis.

    Hi,

I'm having the same issue. I have tried working offline as suggested above, but this does not help.

Shortly after signing to mail the program will stop responding. Unfortunately I have not been able to change the logging settings as it stops responding before I get there.

    I'm having the same issue.

No, you're not. I understood that Fishing&camping couldn't get beyond the splash screen, in which case his problem is a different one from yours:

Shortly after signing to mail the program will stop responding.

I have tried working offline as suggested above, but this does not help.

This would only help to establish whether the problem was with the sign-in and initial sync process. It sounds as if you have already passed this stage when the program stops responding.

Even though you see a Not responding message in the title bar, it doesn't necessarily mean that anything's wrong. It could be that the program is just too busy to react to Windows commands, like the click of a mouse.

However, if the message persists for more than a few minutes, there may be something wrong. The first thing to check is that your display drivers are up to date. Visit your computer manufacturer's site to see if updated drivers are available.

Note that if you're using outdated drivers, no amount of uninstalling and reinstalling will correct the error you're seeing.

    Hi everyone,

To isolate the issue, I strongly recommend that you do a clean removal of Windows Live Mail in your computer. Doing this will delete all registry files that possibly cause the error condition. I know that this is a lengthy procedure but it will definitely help us determine the issue. Make sure though to back up your email messages and contacts first before doing this. Here are the steps:

    To Back-up your emails:

    1. Go to this Windows Live Mail store folder path: C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
    2. Copy the folders and messages you want to back up and move them to another storage location (external or to other folder).
    3. Perform Clean Removal outlined in the above Solution Article.
    4. Open the back-up folder you copied earlier and then drag all the messages with *.eml extensions into the reinstalled Windows Live Mail folders.
    5. Alternately, you can drag the messages to the Storage Folder location to save it to your local hard drive.

    To back up your contacts:

    1. Download LiveContactsView **here**.
    2. Once installed, run LiveContactsView.
    3. By default it will open up the default contacts location from Windows Live Mail.
    4. To open an alternative directory, go to Options menu and select Advanced Options.
    5. From Advanced Options, you may browse the directory that has the restored contacts.

Please note that your contacts database default name is contacts.edb. (Your contacts database file is a hidden file. You must go into folder options, select “Show hidden files” and uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Windows Live Mail contacts (contacts.edb) are located in the below path:

    *C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts{UID}\DBStore*

You may browse all the GUID available in this folder to locate the backed up contacts.edb

    1. After selecting location, click OK. Then it should show a list of contacts.
    2. What you want to do is select all contacts. After selecting all contacts, click on the floppy disk icon to save contacts.
    3. You will get the following window and you can save the set of contacts in a different format. You want to save the contacts as a comma delimited text file (*.csv).
    4. After saving the contacts selections, go back into Windows Live Mail and import your contacts from the CSV file.

After doing these procedures, you may now uninstall Windows Live Mail from your desktop. Complete steps on how this will be done are explained in the article below:

**How to uninstall Windows Live Essentials** ****

Once done uninstalling, you may continue the clean removal, here are the steps:

    1. Open Registry Editor (Click the windows icon also known as the Start button, on the Start Search box, type regedit, and then press ENTER to open a Registry Editor window)

    2. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER, click SOFTWARE, and then click MICROSOFT. Right click Windows Live Mail and then press Delete to remove the registry key.

    3. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click SOFTWARE, and click MICROSOFT. Right click Windows Live Mail and then press Delete to delete the registry key.

    4. Exit Registry Editor and then restart the computer.

After these procedures, you are now ready to download and install the latest Windows Live Mail program. Please click here to do so.

    Thanks.
