I am trying to scan to a PDF file using windows fax and scan. I do not see he option to save the file as a PDF. Although if I use the HP scan I even though it is the same device, and driver. I realize that I could just use the HP Scan for all of me scans, but I like the fact that with windows fax and scan all of my faxes and scans are in the same folder, not  the case with HP Scan.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, the Fax and Scan feature in Windows 7 does not support the .pdf format.

If you have Microsoft Office program installed on the computer, you may try these steps as a work around.

How to convert .tif to .pdf documents using Office Professional (Word) 2007 and Windows 7 Ultimate:

    a)    Open Word 2007

    b)    Click the “Office button” in the upper left hand corner

    c)    Click “New

    d)    Select “Blank document

    e)    Click “Create” button

    f)     Click the “Insert” tab

    g)    Click “Picture

    h)   In “Insert Picture” box, select .tif document to be converted to .pdf by clicking title in Pictures Library (My Pictures)

    i)     See .tif document file title now in “File Name” box of “Insert Picture” box

    j)     Click “Insert

    k)    See the formerly .tif document to be converted to .pdf now as a Word document

    l)     In this new Word document, click the “Office button” in the upper left hand corner

    m)  Click “Save As”, then in resulting drop-down menu click “PDF or XPS

    n)   In resulting Publish as PDF or XPS box, type into the “File name” box the title of the new .pdf document

    o)    In the “Save as type” box, select PDF

    p)    Check the “Open file after publishing” box

    q)    Click “Publish” button

    r)    See former .tif document now as a .pdf document

If this doesn’t help, you may use the HP Scan program or you might have to use your favorite search engine to find a third party program/ application to do this.

I have tested the 3rd-Party Scan To PDF utility (also available from sources other than the Freeware Files page I just linked) and found that it works well. Once I unzipped the package - which consists of English, French, Polish, Russian, & Spanish language files (each with the ".lng" extension), a ReadMe.txt, an stp.ini (i.e., a configuration file) and the PE itself (stp.exe), I scanned the stand-alone PE ("Portable Executable") and it's attendant language & configuration files with my AV suite & found no problems.

I then had a look at the PE with the Virus Total online scanner. The executable had already been scanned 2 Feb 2013 & returned 1 negative result out of 46 Antivirus providers (McAfee-GW-Edition); I re-analyzed & got 1 negative result out of 50 Antivirus providers (Bkav this time, not McAfee-GW-Edition, which now reported it as ok). As the two negative results didn't match in what they reported as the threat, I interpreted these as overly-aggressive detections ("false positives") that may be safely ignored, similar to what is often found with PE's such as NirSoft utilities. Nevertheless, I followed my standard routine of deploying it in a Webroot SafeStart Sandbox first & determining exactly what processes, handles, and threads the PE called, while monitoring it for network traffic - and everything checked clean.

I would recommend using the FreewareFiles Direct Download link to download the .zip package (right-click and "save target as...", which can be done with the link I've just provided); it appears the utility's Home page @ Ironfist Software requires filling in one of a selection of surveys - which may simply be an effort to derive advertising revenue, or may be an indication the site has been hijacked; I didn't investigate further - although it would be nice to be able to donate to the developers as I find Scan To PDF quite useful.
