Windows Update fails with code 800B0001 when checking WSUS (works for web updates) after installing latest version of Windows Update software

I have checked through this site and tried installing the System Update Readiness Tool and all the relevant "Fix It" utilities I could find and none fix the problem. I'm about to try uninstalling the latest Windoes Update patch to see if that fixes the problem but would like a better solution if one exists.

This is a Windows 7 Ent. x64 system and a fresh install of the OS. Dual-Core Intel 2.67 GHz processor with 2 GB RAM.

I was having the same issue on my systems and found this patch for WSUS 3.0 SP2. It was released around the same timeframe that Microsoft change the client on Microsoft Update.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211

I applied the patch on my WSUS server last night and my clients automatically updated there Windows Update client to what appears to be the same version as listed on Microsoft Update. My machines no longer have the issue and I can switch between checking WSUS and Microsoft Update without issue.

Same situation: 2720211 already was installed. I did'nt try to delete those key, but find way out in a  https://support.microsoft.com/en-en/kb/2734608. In a short:

    1. stop iis (in a cmd iisreset /stop)
    2. stop wsus service (in a cmd net stop wsusservice)
    3. download  and install KB2734608 from https://support.microsoft.com/en-en/kb/2734608
    4. start services back

Immediately after those steps my WSUS clients was able to update from WSUS-server.

I've got almost the same problem. But in my situation I had KB2720211 already installed on WSUS. But I've found solution:

    1. Delete on client reg key  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\SusClientId
    2. Restart Windows Update service
    3. Run "wuauclt /resetauthorization".

After that updates starts to work. Hope this solution will help somebody.

I have yet to find a way to uninstall the update as there is no entry for it under updates in the Uninstall Programs and Features dialogue.  I did get the following info about the exact update that I believe to be my problem (Copied from my update history & yes, I tried both the following support articles):

    Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256

    Installation date: ‎06/‎26/‎2012 9:17 AM

    Installation status: Successful

    Update type: Important

The Windows Update Agent enables your computer to search for and install updates from an update service.  The agent can automatically update itself as needed to communicate with the update service when Windows searches for new updates.
