Computer freeze, Event 7001, Service Control Manager

Hi, I've been having this problem more and more frequently lately. My computer randomly freezes up and the audio hangs (if i'm listening to music). Somedays it doesn't happen at all, other days, it happens every few minutes and I'm forced to hard shutdown. I've looked at the event viewer and this is what I get:

The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

- System
- Provider
--- ---

[ Name] Service Control Manager
--- ---

[ Guid] {555908d1-a6d7-4695-8e1e-26931d2012f4}
--- ---

[ EventSourceName] Service Control Manager
--- ---

I've tried virus scans, memtests, and driver updates and none of those seems to have fixed the problem. Since, the error mentions the browser, I primarily use google chrome. My computer freezes regardless of whether I am on chrome or not.

I also get other event 7001 errors:

The SMB 1.x MiniRedirector service depends on the SMB MiniRedirector Wrapper and Engine service which failed to start because of the following error:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

Here are some more instances of this happening. There are tons of these error events on my event viewer log all with event Id 7001

The Network List Service service depends on the Network Location Awareness service which failed to start because of the following error:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

The IP Helper service depends on the Network Store Interface Service service which failed to start because of the following error:

I have a Sony Vaio fw490 laptop.

What should my next step be in trying to fix my computer?

    Hi,

    1. Did you make any recent changes to the computer?
    2. Is the problem occurring randomly or does it only happen while performing a specific task?
    3. Which program are you using to listen to Audio files?

Mine has been odd, too, happening a couple of times on one day last week, then eight times the following day. Since then it’s been on and off, though it happened thrice today (so far).

I haven’t notice any one thing in the Event Log that has caused it though I have been removing everything from Itunes (which gave a day of trouble-free running afterwards) and Flash, as well as stopping certain services, all to no avail. The latest crashes have not seen anything in the Event Log. Also, the computer temperature has been normal.

In my case, with the same GUID, but event ID 7036, I am locked out of my keyboard and mouse, but all other processes continue running. I am able to get on to the computer by Android VNC, set it to sleep with my phone, then it will pick up keystrokes and mouse movements again.

One link I was given (in case it is of help to others) was this:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

I’ve just run the first Fix It, and applied to Windows Updates, to see if the bug can be remedied.

This has been happening on and off for a long time (around 9 months, posibbly more). Back then, it only happened once every week or less. Now, it's happening at least once a day. It's been progressively (though slowly) getting worse. So if it was a "recent change", it happened so long ago that I don't remember.

It seems to happen randomly. It happens when im using microsoft word to write a paper, when im listening to music (on winamp, pandora, or youtube), when im on google chrome just browsing the internet, and when im playing games.

Here's some useful info that I've gathered:

I have a 3 year old sony viao laptop with windows 7 x64 pro dualbooted with ubuntu.

I ran memtest over night for 12 passes and 0 errors were found (so not ram issue).

It also froze in safe mode while I was using Microsoft security essentials to scan.

I replaced my harddrive a year ago and ran a quick harddrive test without any faults (not a harddrive issue)

    I've updated all my drivers

I use a laptop fan and a deskfan to cool my compute (so probably not heat issue, though my computer does get hot if I do intensive processes).

Thanks for the advice. I'll try the clean boot sometime later and let you know if it works.
