I clicked on the Start-up repair but its not starting up. I tried to restart my laptop a couple times, but the same thing happens

It goes to a screen with microsoft corporation and it appears to be loading, but its been loading for about 10mins.

I tried restart using the normal start up method as well, but that didnt work either.

I think I'd run Chkdsk first.  Click Start -> Computer, then right-click C: and click Properties.  Click the Tools tab, then click the Check Now button.  Put a check mark where it says Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.  Then click Start and OK.  It may require you to reboot.  This will go through your hard drive sector by sector and attempt to resolve any bad ones it finds by assigning an alternate.

After that here're some other things you can check.  You could have a virus or other malware. Get your antivirus program up to date and boot into Safe Mode.  Note that some viruses can hide themselves from your antivirus program in normal mode, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode.  To get into Safe Mode when you first power up, hit F8 about once a second until you get the menu and select Safe Mode.  Then run a full system scan.

If that fixes it, fine. If not, use System Restore to go back to a date prior to the beginning of the problem.  To run System Restore, click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.  Click the box that says Show more restore points.

You can check for corrupted system files.  Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above doesn't help. Click START, then type CMD in the search box, right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator. Then from the command prompt type sfc /scannow.

Finally if all else fails, you can check the rather cryptic system event log.  To do so click Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer.  Once in Event Viewer click on the system log and scroll through the entries looking for those flagged "error" to see if you can find hints as to where the problem could be.

When you get your system back in good working order, I urge you to back your system up to an external hard drive and make regular periodic updates to it.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

    Alright thanks.

I have another question, the startup repair has been running for about 2 or 3 hours. It says on the window that it will only take more than an hour. How long should I let it run for before I turn it off? If I turn off my laptop would it affect the harddrive?

You can create a repair disc from any computer running Windows 7.  To do that click Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and restore.  Then click Create a system repair disc.  Insert a CD-R and 2 minutes later you've got your repair disc.

By the way all laptops come with instructions for restoring to factory settings.  Check your user guide and burn any necessary discs when you can.

When you've gotten your system back like you want it I urge you to get yourself an external hard drive and a good 3rd party backup program. You can set it up to do everything automagically at the time and frequency of your choice. 1.5 TB external hard drives are about $90 these days and a really good FREE backup program is the Easeus todo backup free which you can download from

http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm . That can save you a lot of time and frustration the next time something like this happens. Sooner or later it happens to all computers for one reason or another.

     Good luck.

Try booting from a Windows 7 repair disc or install disc and select the reapir option from that.

    Good luck.
