Just turned computer on after a 2 week holiday. Installed latest Microsoft Updates. After computer had been restarted, this never seen before program/application called PC TuneUp Maestro appeared on screen, and performed some sort of scan of computer called Smart TuneUp.

Where did this come from? Is it safe?

Thanks

    Hi AH,

I've no idea how PC TuneUP Maestro from Compuclever got on your system, but I recommend you not run or even open it at all and remove it ASAP.  Many articles consider it a scam.  At best, it's a registry cleaner which is, as all others, poison to your system.  I could not find a single valid review of the product that wasn't rated as dangerous by WOT http://www.mywot.com/.

It may be installed in parts (more than one name or item in the listing) which need to be separately uninstalled.  Though it would probably work with Programs and Features in Control Panel, I recommend using the free Revo: http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html in advanced mode (but being careful that you ONLY remove related items and nothing else - if in doubt, make a note of it and leave it alone).

The sooner it is gone the better.  Probably you were tricked into downloading it with something else without your knowledge (if you didn't do so yourself).

Once done, update and run a full scan of your system with whatever AV program you use to make sure you aren't infected.  Then double-check to make sure it is completely gone.

If you've any doubts anything remains, post back and we'll do a more thorough search for any remnants using some other products to help us find and remove anything discovered.

    Good luck!

    Kosh

Thanks Kosh Vorlon for your input. Ive successfully run revo, uninstalled the annoying PC TuneUp Maestro and confirmed the uninstall by scanning with Norton Internet Security Suite. Also thanks to Joseph Passanise for the info on your successful uninstall of same program. Revo showed me the folders the program and uninstall program resided. Five Stars for REVO!

Thank you Kosh.  I used the Revo Program to unistall it.  I appreciate your help.  I will now do a scan with McAfee.

    Thank you, Joe

Are you sharing your computer with friends or family? Could it be someone else had installed it while you were away?

PC TuneUp Maestro was listed on the Microsoft's website as a legit software:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=PC%20TuneUp%20Maestro&v=CompuClever%20Systems&uid=2&l=en&pf=0&pi=0&s=pc%20tuneup%20maestro&os=64-bit

If you can't get rid of it by uninstalling it, then you need to be worried. I just downloaded it, ran it and uninstalled it. It seemed to be gone completely and cleanly.

    Hi Carl,

Glad to see that some "blasts from the past" are still helping people today - yet sorry to hear that PC TuneUp Maestro continues to cause people to need to seek out such solutions.

I continue to use Revo rather than Windows' or the program's uninstall program to uninstall everything because it always does a better job - just be careful because the reason it works better is also the reason it is more powerful and easier to make a mistake and delete more than you want or should and cause a big headache.

Thanks for the feedback and update.

    Good luck and best wishes!

    Kosh
