During shutdown of Windows XP computer, it may take more time to complete shutdown process. Slow shutdowns are caused many factors. One of the common cause is the Clear Pagefile at Shutdown option enabled.

    Using Group Policy Editor

Click Start, Run and type "Secpol.msc"

Click Local Policies | Security Options

In the right-pane, set Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile to Disabled

However, this setting is not the only cause for slow shutdowns. Non-responsive programs and Services also contribute to slow shutdowns.

If the problem is seen recently after installing a third-party driver or software, try a System Restore to see if that resolves the slow shutdown problem.

That User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is great.   Fixed my slow shut down problem   FINALLY!

What's great about it is that it can be run on almost all windows operating systems....from 98 on.

    Thank you !!!

Update (and I think might be the solution):

While researching this, I came across (and I has heard of this before) that one thing that can cause a super slow shutdown especially if during the shutdown, your computer hangs at "Saving you settings" screen, the problem has to do with the user profile not unloading because of connections made by some processes and programs with the registry (called the user hive).

Thankfully, Microsoft has a fix for it, the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service available for free here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6676

I went from every night having to wait a minimum 5-10 minutes for my computer to shut down and after applying the fix, I'm now shutting down within 30 seconds, sometimes less.

    Hope this helps :)

Uninstall your Norton (or other a/v) in safe mode with tool from maker.

    Reboot and install MSE.

    Update your drivers to latest.
