Is the software 7zip safe or is it malware/spyware?
From www.7-zip.org ???
Good free product, great for the normal home user. May or may not be approved in some super-secure locations - but that is to be expected.
It is not malware/spyware.

If you're getting it from here: http://www.7-zip.org/ it is. I guess CNET download would be good, too, since it probably links back to there (or should have a link to there).

Again, as mentioned several times in this conversation that has now spanned over half a decade... If you get 7-zip from the source (www.7-zip.org) and NOT from questionable sites : good product, I'd say better than most (including winRAR) compression products.
If you download it from other sites (only get it from www.7-zip.org) you run the risk of getting a wrapped product - done by those who are taking advantage of some people's ignorance of getting said product by any other manner than a random web search and clicking on the first link and/or some site tht seemingly lists and possibly compares such products and allows a user to download direct from them. In other words - a scam taking advantage of others.
Get 7-zip from 7-zip.org and it is free, external application free, cross-platform and has one of the best set of compression and decompression algorithms available.
Still wiser to get it direct from those who make it instead.
I wanted to download a qbo editor from file.downloadatoz.com and clicked download, and clicked again on a button to download the setup file. Then 7zip was listed as the download installer. I ended up with a message from Norton 360 that Trojan.ADH2 was blocked. It also downloaded the following programs which I did not want 1) SmartPC Cleaner 2) SLOW-PC Fighter 3) Driver Genius 4) Severe Weather Alerts. I was able to uninstall them but my Windows 8.1 froze on a browser and I had to reboot. OK now. I had previously downloaded 7zip with some additional unwanted software. So I would underscore the advice to only download 7zip it from the originators website. BTW never did get the program I wanted to download.
