I have Iolo system mechanic on my three vista computers. It has been very good at doing many things, but all of a sudden all THREE had the windows installer program bite the dust. This means no ability to install anythign new, and no updates.
I have tried a dozen so called fixes I have found on the web, and the MS autorepair programs run saying everything is fine.
Iolo asked for a bunch of diagnopstic info, then suddenly stopped replying to me. I am not sure how far back this issue went, so I dread doing a full reinstall. I just hoped someone esle had the same problem and figured out how to fix it without a clean install.

My computer was recently infected by a serious trojan horse despite supposed protection by IOLO system mechanic pro updated daily. Removal of the virus was difficult and in the end required several hours professional work. Fortunately so far as I know at present all recipients of the spam email sent by the hacker from my computer recognised the threat - not so IOLO! Customer service has not responded although issue has been recorded and incident number allocated. I recommend that if you have IOLO installed you replace it immediately.
I started seeing my computer hanging up completely recently. After a call to IOLO support, in India, of course, I allowed them to take control of my computer [ big mistake ], the guy tells me that I have many problems on my computer and that for US$ 199.00 he will take care of them. A couple of expletives later , I told him where to go.
I since then, totally uninstalled System Mechanic, and the computer has NOT hung up not even once. The product worked well for a long time, but I believe they have bugs in their program.
I for one will NOT re install it.

I did uninstall it (iolo system mechnic) first before the registry was repaired. Kudos to 'XP Rocks' for finding a solution to this problem.
