Digital Image Suite Replacement for editing images in Windows 7

original title: Digital Image Suite Replacement

The page at http://www.microsoft.com/products/imaging/default.mspx says that many of the tools and features "can now be found in new Microsoft titles and services including Windows Vista"

I'm looking real hard but I ain't seeing them. What titles and services in Windows Vista or Windows 7 will allow me to do basic image editing, paint gradients, work with transparency and layers and apply filters? The only thing that comes with Windows is Photo Viewer and Paint, and the help files for both come up with no results when I search for Gradient. And the Windows Help and Support for Windows 7 and Vista came up with no results for Gradient as well. One should think that if these features are built in to Windows (Vista or 7), they would be mentioned in the help.

In my personal opinion...there is nothing...in Windows

Vista, Windows 7 or any other Windows or anywhere

else that compares with MS Digital Image Suite.

The MS Picture It!, MS Digital Image line of image

editing software was the best of the best and I am still

sad and disappointed that MS saw fit to discontinue it.

Windows Live Photo Gallery was advertised as a sort

of replacement for MS Digital Image Suite...but all I can

    say is...Yeah! Right....

However...it does provide a basic set of editing tools:

Windows Live Photo Gallery - How Do I Edit Photos

And...Windows 7 Paint is certainly a huge step up from

the old version of MS Paint.

    Windows 7 - Using Paint

For ease of use, intuitive design, and a great toolset...

I haven't found anything equal to DIS.

That said... the following programs may worth a try.

    (some free...some retail)

    Paint.NET (free)

    GIMP (free)

    Serif PhotoPlus Starter Edition (free)

    Serif PhotoPlus X5 (retail)

    Corel PaintShop Pro X4 (retail)

    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 (retail)

My thanks to you both...and AMEN V.J!!! I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one that agrees. I often find myself wondering why Microsoft would ax DIS? I smell a conspiracy. It was so powerful and intuitive!

Its probably pointless and futile, but I'll leave this question open in the hopes that it gains the attention of others and Microsoft.

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

I'm in hopes that Microsoft will someday create

a new version of Picture It! / Digital Image but it

is very doubtful that it will ever happen.

For starters I'd check out Windows Live Photo Gallery.  There's a whole suite of Windows Live programs that you can download free which aren't packaged with Windows Vista or 7, but you can download and install them free.

Also I did a search at the MS web site and found this link

    http://search.microsoft.com/en-us/results.aspx?form=MSHOME&setlang=en-us&q=gradient

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

One other free graphics program a lot of folks like is Picassa.  At the places where I teach a lot of folks seem to like it.  You can download it from http://picasa.en.softonic.com/ .

     Good luck.
