Operating System: Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2

I have tried to reinstall the Client for Microsoft Networks on the PC several times. I had deleted it to reinstall because I could not connect to the Internet after I went through the long process to delete ITunes and its associated programs and then reinstalled ITunes from scratch.

Each time the Client install fails. I receive the following Network Connections error message:

"Could not add the requested feature. The error is: The remote procedure call failed."

The PC does not have a Windows install disk.

Is there someway to download the Client for Microsoft networks (to another PC) and then copy and install it on the PC with the problem?

Is there a way to repair the Windows install to see if that might fix the problem?

If possible, I prefer not to do a complete reinstall of Vista and SP 1 and 2. That takes time along with reinstalling all of the programs on the PC.

Thanks for any insights.

    Thank you.

When I attempted the fix you sent, I did not find Rpc in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT.

It appears that the the uninstall of Itunes deleted other registry entries, too.

Example: I attempted to run a different application on the PC and received the following message

    "Could not initialize Windows sockets."

I reinstalled the software and tried to run it again. I received the same message, "Could not initialize Windows sockets."

I read that I could purchase and download the Vista Startup Repair file, burn it to a disc and attempt to repair the Vista installation PC. Does this repair restore registry settings to the original install?

If not, what other options do I have short of a complete reinstall of Vista and then most of the programs on the PC?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I would suggest you to perform the steps mentioned below and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Temporarily disable the security software and check if you are able to install the client for Microsoft Network.

Note: Make sure to enable the security software’s after completing the troubleshooting and identifying the issue so that the computer is protected.

    Method 2:

Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows)

    i. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe, and then click OK

ii. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Rpc

iii. Click the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

iv. Type Server2003NegotiateDisable as the name of the new DWORD Value

    v. Right-click Server2003NegotiateDisable, and then click Modify.

vi. In the Value Data box, type 1, and then click OK.

Note: This setting disables the bind time negotiation and multiple transfer syntax negotiation.

vii. Quit Registry Editor. Restart the computer.

viii. After the firewalls and VPN devices are compatible with RPC on the computer, set the value for the Server2003NegotiateDisable entry in the registry to 0. Then, restart the computer.

    Hope this information is helpful.
