Received error code 80004005 when trying to import photos and video from camera into Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Have spent several hours in tech support with Canon trying to resolve not being able to download photos from camera to my Win XP computer.   Usually computer detects camera and asks "How would you like to import the photos?" and shows list in a window.   We are getting no list in that window, but did succeed in populating the window briefly and getting WLPG to detect photos and video, but when we went to import, we received the 8004005 error.   Subsequently, things regressed, and we are back to not getting any response from computer saying that it detects photos or video - nothing.   So back to square one.

There are two problems here - likely related:  The inability to import photos and video, and the 80004005 error.   Which came first, and is there cause and effect here, and which way does it go?  Inquiring minds want to know - and be able to import photos and video from Canon Powershot A3100IS camera again.

After several hours Canon Tech Support was completely stymied and indicated it was likely an OS issue with my computer.

Thanks for all your great suggestions.    I did finally fix the problem, but I'm not sure exactly what fixed it.   I ended up running CCleaner (lastest version) and doing a "windows" , "applications" and "registry" cleanup.   This required a re-boot, and when I re-booted, that's when I was able to finally download the pics from the camera.    Not exactly sure what fixed the problem, but perhaps there are greater minds here who may be able to say, "Yes, by doing blah, blah, blah, you did this....".

All I know is that many hours of fruitless tech support and re-installing software and then, finally, runing CCleaner paid off.    I will save your info in case I need it in the future.... thanks again.

Several ideas...good luck...

It may be worth a try to change the camera settings from

WIA to PTP.

Maybe the following documentation would be useful:

Setting The Communication Mode

(Notes on the PTP Function)

http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/d_eos/10D_PTP.pdf

===

Did Canon Support ask you to run the following Wizard?

Download the Microsoft Autoplay Repair Wizard:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?DisplayLang=en&id=2648

===

Also...go to...Start / Computer...and right click the Removable

Disk that represents the Camera and from the menu...choose...

Properties / Autoplay tab and open the drop window and select

Pictures. And...tick...'Prompt me each time to choose an action'.

Maybe this will restore the Autoplay window when you connect

the camera..

Also you could try...left clicking the "Restore Defaults" button /

Apply / OK.

===

Simple fix may be to purchase an internal or external USB

Media Reader. Then just remove the memory card from the

camera, insert it in the reader and download your photos.

There can be other benefits to this method...for one it won't

drain your camera batteries while downloading and may

even be faster.

===

And...FWIW...low camera batteries when downloading can

cause corrupt photos.

Also you could try the following steps with a camera connected

by USB or with a USB media reader.

Connect the camera to your PC via USB cable and turn

on the camera...if any windows open...close them.

Next...go to...Start / My Computer...the camera may be

listed as a drive letter....

If_yes_right click the drive letter and choose...Explore or

Open...this should display the directory of the memory card.

You can copy/paste or drag/drop the files from there to a

folder on your hard drive.

(The same steps will work if you have a Media Reader...

when you go to...Start / My Computer...the slots of the Media

Reader should be listed as...'Removable Disk' with a drive

letter.)

    I may have spoken too soon - or, rather, celebrated too soon.   When I tried to download pictures again a few days later, the same problem came up - but without the error code.  Just getting a message that "no photos or video were found on the camera".

    Back to square one - or, perhaps, to try some of the ideas you suggested.
