In regards to XP Home vs XP Pro, the Pro version is more designed for a corporate networked environment. Most of the differences involve network-related areas, while others address increased security, permissions, and control. A few things that come to mind:
- XP Pro can be a member of a Domain environment. Home Can't (only Workgroup)
- XP Home enforces Simple File Sharing where all incoming connections authenticate as the "Guest" user for access to files. XP Pro can turn off Simple File Sharing and enforce a higher level of access control to files.
- XP Pro can accept 10 simultaneous incoming connections. XP Home only 5
- XP Pro offers the Encrypting File System (EFS) for a higher level of protection of files. XP Home doesn't. IMHO, This is one good reason to stick with Home as EFS is known as the "Delayed Recycle Bin"
- XP Pro offers Group Policy whereby an [remote] admin can set access policies/permissions on machines
- XP Pro offers a 64-bit version, Home doesn't.
- XP Pro offers Remote Desktop Connection. Home doesn't.
