Hi

Anyone know how to get your hdd to work again?

When I try to open the WD hdd in, Start - Computer and then double-click on the hdd drive, I just get this up: F: \ Is not accessible.

I've built my desktop  computer, on my own, win7 64 bit SP 1 included , MSI MB, Crucial M4 128GB main hard drive.

* Have tried restarting the computer, does not work.

* Plug in the WD hdd in my laptop Win7 64bit, does not work, same error.

In Disk Manager, I see that the hard drive works fine, and I see that it has the right amount of space left, since the last time I used the hard drive.

Which means that I prefer not to format the hard disk until I moved all my important files to another hard disk.

But how do I contact with my Western Digital Elements Desktop WDBAAU0015HBK 1.5TB External Hard Drive?

best regards

Jocke

If in Device Manager there are no yellow warning marks I would use the WD disk checking utility, SeaTools to test the drive.

The fact that the problem is replicated when connect to another PC doesnt bode well, and it maybe that the drive has failed

    Hi Jocke,

First things first: let's try to salvage your files!

Method 1: (take a look at method 2 first before starting method 1, maybe this is more to your likings.)

Since you've build your own PC I guess you're tech savvy enough to boot your PC to a Linux environment. I've seen many HDD's that suddenly wouldn't open in Windows anymore but opened normally in a Linux environment like Ubuntu, Mint, DSL, etc., etc.

    • Grab an empty (emptied) USB drive.
    • Download Universal USB installer.
    • Find yourself a Linux distro to your likings. Take a look at Distrowatch or just go with my favorite version: Linux Mintand download the .iso.
    • Run the USB installer tool
    • In step 1 scroll down to Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon (or the distro chosen by you)
    • In step 2 browse to the just downloaded .iso
    • In step 3 select the empty USB drive.
    • Start the process.

When finished restart your PC with the USB drive attached. During boot select the boot options menu and choose to boot from USB. Now boot Linux Mint. No need for installation! :D

When you've arrived at the desktop, lookup your Western Digital Elements HDD in 'Computer'. Now hope and pray it'll open! If so: start copying all files and folders immediately to another drive.

When all is save go back to Windows and format the WD hdd. With some luck it'll run again. You'd better check the SMART data to check if the drive's status.

    Method 2:

Since the drive shows up in Drive Manager, try making an image of it using a program like DriveimageXML or whatever you like. When done, try to read the contents of the image. If you're able to do this then you have just saved your data. Now format the WD hdd. With some luck it'll run again. You'd better check the SMART data to check if the drive's status.

    Good luck, Sebastian.

It would seem the hard drive has failed or is failing.  You will need to record the results of the test.  It would be need to be supplied to WD Tech Support when you would start the warranty replacement process, if you decide to exercise the warranty process.

    Hi

When I run WD data lifeguard diagnostics quick test, I see a lot of values.

It looks like my WD HDD values are higher than the threshold!

I've just started the long test, which will take on a 1.5 TB WD 13 hours

    ;-(
