Hi everyone

I am trying to install the Microsoft driver update for HP Deskjet 3920-3940 which I downloaded from Windows Catalog. The file is .CAB and once extracted it looks like the following:

If I try to install it launching the the inf file, I get the warnig message: The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation

How should I do it then?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation

There are two problems you're going to have.  One is getting the proper driver and the other is connecting the printer to the proper port.  The following directions explain how to get the driver.  Getting a USB port and associating it with the printer is not so easy.  See http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/4cae5aad-0ca0-431f-8774-70b9842baaf2/

Although Ronnie Vernon usually has good advice, I just looked at my Windows 7 Pro system and there is no "USB001(Virtual Printer Port for USB)" in the list of existing ports.  It may require that you add some random USB printer, disconnect it, and then use the port for your DJ 3920.

[directions are for adding a shared printer]

    1. Go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com, download the correct "driver package" for Windows 7 x64 ("AMD64 Architecture")
    2. Extract the contents of the cab file using the Expand command in a command prompt window
    3. Add the driver package to the driver store using pnputil.exe -a <inf from the expanded cab file>
    4. Go to Add a printer and select "Add a local printer"
    5. Selected "Create a new port" and selected "Local Port" (don't use Standard TCP/IP port, because you can't use \computername\sharename as an IP address -- you can only use that form in "Local Port")
    6. Got to the list of printer drivers where now the driver for the your DJ 3920 is listed, so it can be selected
    7. Finish the install, send a test page, and it should work.

    Thanks Shenan...

I would have loved to be able to do it that way... unfortunately my network doesn't allow access to WU directly and IT seems not to be interested in giving me a hand... I should have mention it while opening the thread. Apologies.

I really hoped I could have install it from the .CAB

    Is it possible?

If, when adding the printer, you browse to that location - the one where you extracted the CAB - and tell it to look for a driver there: what happens?

    I'll try it asap, tnx!

** (the important part) **  On the Install the printer driver page, click Windows Update, and then wait while Windows checks for additional drivers.  Then select the printer manufacturer and model and click Next.

Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

You should end up installing the latest driver HP provided to Microsoft for that legacy device.

    Thanks Shenan...

Another problem with keeping hardware devices when the company that manufactured them consider them legacy.

Are you trying to install the driver for the first time?  This is probably your best bet and even if it isn't your first time - make it like that (unhook the printer, uninstall whatever is in devices for it and follow these steps...)

    • Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
    • Click Add a printer.
    • In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer. On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click Next.
    • ** (the important part) **  On the Install the printer driver page, click Windows Update, and then wait while Windows checks for additional drivers.  Then select the printer manufacturer and model and click Next.
    • Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.
