I have exactly same issue and I can tell it has nothing to do with virus or computer problem. It is directly linked to microsoft update KB2691442 recently launched.

After the problem occured, I reverse my computer to previous date (with Ghost image) and I have installed one per one the 14 updates of Windows (I have W7-64), testing effect after each patch, until I found that the issue appears after I install KB2691442.

So I ghost it back again, reinstalled all WindowsUptade patches apart the famous KB2691442, and the problem is not there. No doubt the issue comes from Microsoft!!

Actually, in the past another windowsUpdate had created same problem. But I found a patch to correct this bug (so called KB980408 Fix.reg, you can find it on the web). Unfortunatly, this corrective patch is not working on the new issue created by KB2691442.

While I have a solution with not installing KB2691442, this is very annoying:

    • to see that official patch from MS creates problem to our computer
    • it is a safety update, and not so happy I cannot install.

If anyone has a solution (such as KB980408 Fix.reg), happy to hear

    fred

I have tried what you suggested, it just doesn't work.

    • I have tried the clean boot state (which I am still in while writting), desable all services but MS ones (also Karspersky that cannot be disable at start), then installed the (too) famous KB2691442, restart and problem is exactly the same (while trying to cut/paste a directory or file, it says "file doesn't exisit" and if you click ignore, it works, but this false alert window is just non acceptable on daily work).
    • I have also check all drives with chsckdsk, problem is still there.

The KB2691442 update from MS has clearly a bug somewhere (in same way as KB980408 in the past, but fortunately someone found a solution at that time, called "KB980408 Fix.reg").

I will Ghost back my C drive prior to this exercise and will not install the defective KB2691442 until someone (or Microsoft... shall be their task) provides a solution which we could call "KB2691442 Fix.reg".

    Thanks anyway

    Fred

    Hi,

I would suggest you to check if the issue persists in a clean boot state.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 mentioned in the article to boot the computer to normal startup.

Try downloading the updates manually in clean boot state.

You may also go through the steps mentioned in the link which talks about a similar issue.

I am having the same exact problem, and it is DEFINITELY related to KB2691442. It started appearing as soon as I did the last Windows Update.  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 (x64).

I did a System Restore prior to the last 7-10 Windows Updates and then reinstalled each update one at a time until I isolated KB2691442, testing after each KB update simply by right-clicking in any Windows Explorer folder and attempting to create a new folder (which is how I first noticed the bug, as I create new folders on my HD almost every day as part of my job).  Re-installed every single update except KB2691442.  As soon as you install that, the bug happens.  As soon as you rollback via system restore to remove it, the bug is gone.  I have not made any other changes to my system whatsoever.

This has NOTHING to do with corrupt data and it doesn't matter what drive or partition it's on.  I get the error on my C: drive, D: drive, and even when I insert my digital camera's SD card into my card reader and right-click to create a folder on the removable drive there (I: drive).  A Windows dialog pops up with the error, then Explorer creates the folder anyway.   Also happens anytime you drag or drop a folder to cut, copy, paste, etc.  Basically any folder creation operation at all!  Major annoyance

    The popup is:

    "Could not find this item.

This is no longer in [DRIVE:\PATH]."

Then you click OK and it creates the directory.

This is a pretty annoying and major bug, as it affects every file operation on the PC after KB2691442 is installed.

Please let me know when this is fixed!  Will not be installing KB2691442 until then.

    Hi,

    1.       How long have you been facing this issue?

    2.       Are you logged in as the administrator?

    3.       Do you have any Anti-virus application installed on the computer?

    4.       Have you made any recent software changes on the computer?

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the FIXIT and check,

Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to go run the Microsoft security Essentials and check for any infections.

    Microsoft Security Essentials

**Note:**There is a chance that some data might be deleted if any infections are detected.

Try moving the folder and check if the issue persists, if not move to method 2:

    Method 3:

I would also suggest you to check for any errors on the hard disk.

    Check a drive for errors

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

**Important:**While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.
