Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(10.0.0.2).

I am using an HP Pavilion and trying to connect wirelessly through a Linksys E3000.  I can connect to my router, but cannot access the internet.  I CAN access the internet when I connect with an ethernet cable.  This issue began after my laptop was used to connect to a school's network and some settings were changed in my computer.  I have been unable to figure out which settings they are.  I am hoping that this is a simple fix!

    Hi,

    Method 1:

You may try a Clean Boot and fireout what is blocking you out to the internet

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After trouble shooting put the computer to start as usual by performing step 7 from the above Knowledge Base article.

    Method 2:

    Step 1

    a) Connect to your router (by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar) and log in. Check your user manual or documentation if you do not know the log-in credentials.

    b) Make sure you are in the Setup -> Basic Setup category.

    c) Scroll down until you see 'DHCP Server' - if it is disabled, select 'Enable'.

    d) EnableDHCP If you want, you can change the number that the DHCP IP assigning starts. (this is optional)

    e) Use the DNS servers provided to you by your ISP. There are many DNS servers out there. It's best to use your ISP's if possible.

    f) Scroll down and click 'Save Settings'.

    Step 2

    a) Click on Start and then Control Panel.

    b) Go to Networking and sharing center and then click on Change adapter settings.

    c) Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

    d) Highlight Internet Protocol Version 6 and click on Properties.

    e) Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically and press OK.

    f) Choose Obtain IP address automatically.

    g) Repeat the steps for Internet Protocol version 4 as well.

    Method 3:

If the above step fails then run the fixit tool available in the below Microsoft article and check if it works.

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

Method 1, firewall restart did the trick.  Spent hours on other solutions but the simplest fix worked.  Had been using a vacation rental router for a week and when I returned had the same symptoms as Rachel with my Vista laptop and Linksys router.  Thanks Arya for the concise solution.

    Hi,

You may follow the instructions below which might help you in resolving the issue.

**Method 1:**Let us try to disable the firewall and check the issue. Re-enable the firewall after checking the issue.   Check if the issue is resolved.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks

    Method 2:

In order for the network to work properly, let us check to see if your network services are running correctly.

    a.    Open the Start Menu

    b.    Type services in the Start Search area and press Enter

    c.    Click on Continue in the UAC (User account control )prompt

    d.    Locate Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, and Network Store Interface Service

    e.    Verify that Status is set to Started and Startup Type is set to Automatic

    f.    If this is not the case then right click the service and select Start to start the service

    g.    Right click the service and select Properties and change the Startup type to Automatic

    h.    Repeat as necessary for the services listed in step “d”   Check if the issue is resolved.

    Method 3:

If you still have issue connecting to the network or internet follow this steps which fixes most connectivity issues.

     Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:
