Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing and Restarting

Recently I've gotten a new problem with my computer. I keep getting a "Windows Explorer has crashed" and then "Windows Explorer is restarting" which interrupts anything I'm doing at that time.

I've already run the gambit of solutions here.

  • No viruses detected by either McAfee or Malwarebytes
  • Tried copying "explorer" application into C:\Windows\System32, didn't fix it
  • System Restore to well before the problem occurred didn't fix it
  • sfc /scannow didn't do anything
  • sfc /scanfile="C:\Windows\Explorer" said it couldn't complete the operation
  • Clean Boot and Repair Install options using F8 didn't resolve the issue
  • Action Center has no recommendations
  • Chkdsk has already been run and it said it fixed some errors, but the problem still occurs.
  • There is no disc with which to do a re-install of Windows 7 since it came loaded on the computer
  • No rhyme or reason to the triggering of the message - it occurs when doing nothing as often as when something is actually going on

The only problem I can see is when I shut down the computer or restart I get a message saying "An error has occurred when somethingx-lots-of-numbers-and-letters tried to address something at somethingxFFFFFFFFFFF. The process will now be terminated." Its really hard to tell what it says - the message flashes by way too quickly and my computer shuts down and closes it.

This is incredibly annoying and I think I'm out of options to fix it by now.

EDIT: Here is a crash report from the Action Center:

There could be several causes for this issue –

Major cause could be corrupt driver installation; but there is a good chance that it is the result of the last update of you ATI Graphic Adapter Driver. There are reports that AMDs Graphic Driver version 12.9 can be causing the crash when using it with explorer and various fdisplay configurations.

It's also been reported that you can correct the issue if you either downgrade the driver back to 12.8.

There is also reports that if you just replace atiumd64.dll (version 12.9) with atiumd64.dll (version 12.8) the proble will go away.

<<I Found a Thread on GuRu 3D which corroborates what I say here:

I hope this helps!!

To remove your current driver if the crashes are too frequent, boot win 7 in safe mode

You could be prompted for the administrator password or confirmation that you are allowed to make those kinds of changes;

Step 1:

Download the appropriate graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website (Version 12.8 and 12.9 )

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Step 2:

Explode the 12.8 driver so that you can get to file atiumd64.dll and save it somewhere you can get to it.

Step 3:

Remove your current install of the graphic adapter from the Device Manager by:

a) Right-click My Computer

b) Select Manage

c) click Device Manager

d) Locate Display Adapter

e) Right-click the device name

f) Select Uninstall Driver

Step 4:

Reboot

Step 5:

Install the ATI driver 12.9

Search for atiumd64.dll (the 12.9 version) and repalce it with the 12.8 version

Check to see if the issue persists and let us know
