Windows Media Center cannot detect DVD error Windows Media Center cannot detect a DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. Insert a video DVD into the drive

Original title : Why won't Windows Media Center detect my DVD?

I built my computer ASUS P658D mother board, i7 2.6gHz Intel processor, 12Gb RAM, 750W Corsair Pwr. supply, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit & ie9. When I put either one of two DVDs in either of two DVD drives Windows Media Center appears and when I click on "Play DVD" Media Center gives me a window that says:

"Windows Media Center cannot detect a DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. Insert a video DVD into the drive." The two DVDs I've tried are an instructional DVD for

my Nikon D300 digital camera and a family video DVD and both these DVD play very well in a similarly built computer running Windows 7 64bit Professional, & ie8.

I've tried Microsoft Fixit, no help. I've tried to email Microsoft Support, and I have gotten NO HELP. I've not made any changes, and installed no programs, just

browsed the internet. One DVD drive is a Sony Optarc with Microsoft Driver, the other is ASUS. I've also tried to use Windows Media Player but either nothing

comes up or it sends me back to Windows Media Center and it will not detect of play either of my DVDs. How can I get help here, or from Microsoft? Thanks.

No, there are no yellow warnings in Device Manager and the device manager says both DVD drives are working correctly. Mr. Fix it is

a microsoft automated download that is supposed to automatically fix some problems but it provided no help here. I think it most likely

that this is a problem with Windows Media Center and/or Windows 7 Pro 64bit, and not either of my two new DVD drives from Sony

and ASUS.

I reasoned my way into a solution. My thinking was:The Device Manager says both DVD drives are working correctly and both are new and one is Sony and the other ASUS so I think a problem with the drives unlikely. The problem is with Windows Media Center not "DETECTING the DVD". So there must be a problem with Windows Media Center. I thought I might need to reinstall Windows 7... then I thought maybe if I just reinstall Windows Media that will work. It did. My Fix was:

start>control panel>Programs and features>Turn Windows features on or off> then uncheck the box for Media Features>reboot computer>then recheck the box to restore Media Features> Now both drives play both DVDs I had been trying. Both drives work normally. Reinstalling the Media Features of Windows 7 fixed the problem. Thanks to all who offered solutions.

    Hi hayhurst2,

So just to verify, Windows 7 does recognize the actual DVD drives, but doesn't play any DVD that you have in the drive?

I'm not sure if this is the same Fixit you tried, but please take a look at the article here with troubleshooting that will hopefully help.

    Thanks!

No yellow or other warnings in Device Manager, and the Device Manager says both

DVD drives are working properly. Mr. Fix it is an automated Microsoft software that

is supposed to automatically fix some Microsoft problems but is of NO help here.

You can find it on Microsoft website.

Mr. Fixit is a Microsoft automated repair software that you can download from

the Microsoft Download Center. It is an automated repair that is supposed to

fix some problems, but was no help for this malfunction and it found no errors.

There are no yellow warnings in Device Manager and it says both drives

are working correctly. I feel sure the problem is with Windows Media Center

and/or Windows 7 and is not with both of my two DVD drives that are both

new and from different companies Sony and ASUS.
