My computer wont boot windows, it get stuck in the loop of failing at starting windows and restarting. Ive tried start up repair and it cant fix it, Ive tried two different system restore points, ran the windows memory diagnostic tool and I do not have a system image to recover it or an installation disc. I think this all happened because I changed four of the 7 programs that were starting immediatly at the same time when starting up the computer. I didnt turn them off but I delayed them to try and increase speed on start up and suddenly windows wont start. how can i access the control panel from the command prompt? what is the exact command i have to type in? The title of the command prompt is Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe on the black screen it reads X:\Windows\System32> then space for me to type. Please please please tell me there is a way to open the control panel so i can restore the settings to normal and have windows be able to start again. I dont want to lose all of my documents and pictures over something so stupid. I dont understand why start up repair cant solve this problem easily

UPDATE: ok so i had a blonde moment, I found the 'disable automatic restart on system failure' and ran it, I got the Blue Screen of Death with the following info:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. (how do I do this??)

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80786B58, 0xC000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

thats all greek to me, Im hoping it means something to you, and something that can be fixed. Ive now tried all of the Advanced Boot Options on that screen except 'enable low-resolution video' and like i read in another forum I've run Startup Repair several times in case there were a few bugs to work out and still Im stuck in the loop :(

gateways website will have the information of how to

get the recovery disks for your model of laptop . .

the price should be minimal ,like around ten bucks or so .

gateway  , if the copy of vista on your laptop is o.e.m. ,had to

supply a way to recover vista in case of a hard drive failure ..

you could allso try a linux boot repare disk to repare windows .

but ,i must allso say that this website is not  a  good place for

    help for unligit windows .

when gateway shipped your laptop a hidden partition  must have

    been on it .

there are other free dounloadable programs other than the linux  one

that may  help you recover .

if it had vista on it did the recovery hidden partition get wiped out

when the pirate win 7 was installed  ?

if it was wiped and you have no vista disks you may have to

get  vista disks from the pc`s manufacturer ..

    Hi JamiePYZ,

    1. Do you receive any error codes or messages?
    2. Have you tried booting in safe mode?

You may try the following steps and check if it helps:

    Method 1:

First you may try Last Known Good Configuration (LKGC) and check if helps to resolve the issue.

Refer the link to use LKGC:

    Using Last Known Good Configuration

    Method 2:

    Step 1:

You may try booting in safe mode and check if the issue occurs.

For further information, refer to the articles:

Start your computer in safe mode

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

    Step 2:

If you can boot in safe mode without any issues, then try performing a clean boot.

A clean boot helps to verify if any third party application services or startup item is causing this issue.

You may refer the following KB article to put the computer in clean boot:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

**Note:**Make sure you put the computer back to Normal Startup once you are done with the troubleshooting.

    Method 3:

If the issue persists, you may disable automatic restart on system failure and check for the errors.

For further information, refer to the article:

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

You may also upload the screenshot of the message, so that we can help you further with the issue.

Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picture. (Updated: 1/16/2012)

Thank you for your quick reply! I'll answer your questions...

    1. I do not receive any error codes or messages to my knowledge, however right before my computer restarts a screen flashes for a split second but its gone so quickly that I can't even get a glimpse at what it says.
    2. I have tried booting it in safe mode and unfortunatly the same problem occurs, it tries to start windows then fails and restarts.

    Method 1:

I tried using Last Known Good Configuration also with the same exact results, windows fails and it restarts.

    Method 2:

It will not boot even in safe mode, when I select boot in safe mode it goes through the process of showing all the drivers loading and things, the huge list of programs or commands I guess, then before it even gets done there it fails and restarts.

    Method 3:

I clicked the link you provided in regards to disabling automatic restart on system failure, but it did not provide the directions on exactly how to do that. Quite honestly I doubt I would be able to do it seeing as how my computer doesnt get past the 'starting windows' screen before restarting.

The only other thing I can provide you is the details of the error when I try to run Startup Repair...

    Problem signature:

    Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline

    problem signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

    problem signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

    problem signature 03: unknown

    problem signature 04: 21200995

    problem signature 05: AutoFailover

    problem signature 06: 12

    problem signature 07: NoRootCause

    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

    Locale ID: 1033

From there ive clicked view advanced repair options and the System Recovery Options menu opens (after logging on as the Owner) it say Operating system: Windows 7 on (D:) Local Disk, and I have gone through each of the options; Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery (I dont have one) Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt. The only thing I've been able to get anywhere with is the Command Prompt but I have no idea what commands to give it. I should mention that before this started and exactly as the same time I changed those settings to delay start up on  the 4 programs, there was also a virus detected by Norton Antivirus that I was in the process of removing, it was something that had to be done manually and I installed their Removal Tool which partially removed it then I was to restart it and run a full system scan. Right before I went to restart it I changed those settings because it was taking nearly 10 minutes for windows to load and have the computer fully booted and ready to use. Then I restarted it and voila now Windows wont load. I should also mention another thing which i sincerely hope does not effect your decision to continue helping me, as I had no knowledge of this, my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine, the last time I got the computer completely wiped clean because of viruses, i brought it to a local repair guy, my laptop originally had Windows Vista on it when I bought it, without asking he installed Windows 7 onto my computer after he wiped it clean and I had no idea it was basically boot legged until about a month later when suddenly the black screen stayed and there was a window that said your copy of windows may not be genuine. I followed the prompts to fix it or to verify it and found out sure enough my product ID was in use by someone else (no idea who) I have not had the time or money to bring it back to the guy to fix since. That is also why I am posting on this forum, I dont have the money to go get it fixed, and I need as much help as i can possibly get and also have it really in lamens terms as I am no IT professional.

Thank you again for your quick response and suggestions, please dont hold it against me that someone else gave me a ripped off version of windows 7 and please continue to give me more ideas!

    Jamie
