Is it possible to get multiple desktops like Linux systems on my Windows 7 desktop?

Is it possible that Microsoft would add this feature by default to later versions of Windows?

Yes, you can run Multiple desktops on your windows 7 by using virtual desktops. hosted virtual desktop does not only allows you to use multiple desktops side-by-side, but also you can run multiple operating systems (OS) on the same device, without even rebooting the device.

Here is an interesting video demonstrating this:

Hosted virtual desktop are hot. And organizations are using HVDs to keep infrastructure costs low, increase internal management control of its IT systems, and support productivity from anywhere.

Also, Microsoft recently released a Case-Study of an Asset Management Firm Uses Hosted Desktop Solution to Reduce IT Budget by 50 Percent. And the benefits are not only limited to Cost savings, but customers also recorded an increased workforce productivity, enhanced IT control, and greater operational flexibility.

Yes, the above tool allows to create maximum 4 virtual desktops. Also, one more opensource tool available which allows to create maximum 10 virtual desktops.

The above both tools are very light weight software. But the actual purpose of having multiple desktops can't be full filled by these tools, because you can't have different wallpapers, icons set and gadgets.

If you are looking for another program with more options but free, then there is a tool available.

I have covered these tree products here under Windows 7 multiple desktops here.
