HP v220w USB memory stick is not recognized by my computer anymore

Well the issue is that when I plug in my USB drive, the computer pops up the info bubble saying that "USB Device Not Recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." I've tried uninstalling the memory via "Device Manager" and then reinstalling it, but when it reinstalls and says the device is ready to use, it doesn't appear on "My Computer" nor in the "Safely Remove Hardware." My computer is a Windows XP 2002, don't know if that helps or anything, the USB Flash drive is HP v220w USB Flash Drive, with 8GB capacity, don't know if this info is useful, hope someone can help. Thanks

    Hi, Fredy,

Try using this tool to format the drive

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml

Look in Device Manager.  Is there a yellow exclamation mark or question mark?  If so, post back the code #.

Well the yellow exclamation mark only appears when I do the following:

I uninstall the "Unknown device" then I "Scan for hardware changes" and as it's installing the "new" hardware, the yellow exclamation mark appears briefly as it is installing, then quickly disappears when it is "ready to use," but still appears as "Unknown Device." I managed to get a glimpse of the code before it quickly disappeared, it's Code 1... I've even downloaded the HP Drive Key Boot Utility tool from HP to see if I could do something but it didn't detect the memory stick...

    Code 1

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) To update the drivers for this device, click Update Driver. If that doesn't work, see your hardware documentation for more information.

Solution button: Update Driver This code means that the system has not had a chance to configure the device. To resolve the problem, follow the instructions in the Device Status box. In addition, you may be able to resolve this issue by removing the device in Device Manager, and then running the Add New Hardware wizard from Control Panel.

Assuming Intel chipset is installed, go here and use the utility to see if there is an update..  Select "automatically detect and update drivers and software" option.

You may have to re-assign the drive letter

Well I tried the download from softpedia, but it still doesn't detect my memory, so it can{t do anything, I tried the Intel Upgrade detection thing and it either took too long or it was not going anywhere, because I left it for about 2 or 3 hours and it didn't do anything, just said it was analyzing. And re-assigning drive letter didn't work as well due to the fact that it didn't detect the USB... don't know if there is any other way, still thanks so far for the tips because I'm learning new things about my computer
