I upgraded my OS from Windows Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro.  My Sony Microvault USB 3.0 thumb drive was not recognised by my laptop's USB 3.0 port. It worked well before the upgrade. I tried to re-install the driver but Windows said that the driver was up to date. What might be the problem?

Did you check the status of the device from Device Manager.

Method 1:

Run hardware and troubleshooter and check.

a) Press “Windows Key + R”, type Control Panel.

b) Then type “Troubleshooter” in the Search box and hit enter.

c) Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

d) Select “Hardware and Devices”.

Method 2:

You may refer the manufacturer website and try installing the latest driver compatible for windows 8 and check.

http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Microvault/support/index.html

If there is not driver compatible with Windows 8 then, you may update the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.

c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.

The actual reason your USB 3.0 Device isn't working is because USB 3.0 Does not work with Windows 8 as it isn't compatible. Windows 8 does offer support for USB 3.0 but it does not work with the Sony system. What actually happens is your USB 3.0 port is downgraded to the speeds of USB 2.0 which means the port will still work but not at USB 3.0 speeds. Intel state on their website that they have no intention whatsoever of providing an upgrade to this driver. see link: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/usb3/sb/CS-033870.htm

So, to summarize: Windows 8 machines are being sold with USB 3.0 ports which customers are paying for except they don't work to their full potential. What annoys me is, is that many consumers will not realise this is the case. I have been into my local retailer and tested this and the problem seems to apply to all manufacturers. The local supplier is now looking into this and contacting all parties involved. Finally we did try this on Intel chipsets and also AMD chipsets and we did notice an improvement in speeds of USB 3.0 ports on the AMD machines but speeds were exactly the same on USB 2.0 and 3.0 on the Intel machine.

You might have AI Charger, installed, which will make your computer block all your USB ports.

    Try going here  http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/

Download the latest version, and when using setup, one of the options should be "Remove/Uninstall"

Remove AI Charger and restart. Your USB's should work normally again.

    Hi,

I tried your method 1. The first time it did not work.  I got an error message, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" in the Device Manager's USB Mass Storage Device.

I unplugged and inserted the thumb drive again.  The second time around, it recognized the thumb drive and I could access the files on the drive.

I must highlight that my laptop has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.  The problem I experienced only occurs with the USB 3.0 port.  The USB 2.0 ports can detect the thumb drive every time.

I tried method 2 as well.  I could not find any drivers for Win 8 on the Sony support site.  I could not find any relevant drivers to update when I tried the compatibility search as well.
