Didn't work for me. My user folder is still named "C:\Users\MyOldFirstName". This is really annoying about Windows 8.

I just did this and it changed the user name from a**h**e (which my knucklehead son thought would be funny (It was funny for a minute)) to a regular name.

Press Windows key + X and click Control Panel.

Select User Accounts and Family Safety

    Select user accounts again

Under Make changes to r user account, click on  Change your account name

Here is what worked for me:

    1. Using your browser, sign into your Windows Live account. Once logged in, change the name on your account to the correct name you want to use in Windows 8. (Go to Account Settings -> Edit Name)
    2. In Windows 8, switch to using a local account. You will be prompted to create a username and password for your local account. (Go to PC Settings -> Switch to a local account) Note: I believe you cannot access the Windows Store while logged in using a local account.
    3. You will be logged out of your live account, and logged into your local account.
    4. Go back to PC Settings, and this time click the gray Switch to a live account button. (The button text may be slightly different.) You will be prompted for your live e-mail address and password.
    5. Follow the steps to log back in using your live account. Your account name will now be updated/corrected to what you changed it to in step 1.

This worked for me when changing my first and last name. Everything, including my user folder on the desktop, is now showing the correct name.
