Connected to network with internet access but cannot display any pages

Starting about two days ago, my ability to access web pages just stopped. I can access the internet on any other computers we have in the house, and they load the same as before. IE, Firefox, and Chrome all produce similar error messages along the lines of "this page cannot be displayed" with solution ideas ranging from "try again later" to "the server cannot be reached."

I don't really know what information you guys need to help me out, but really the only things I did out of the ordinary two days ago was run a virus scan and delete some of my windows.old files (I just recently upgraded to Windows 8).

    Hi,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8. I will surely help you to find a resolution regarding the issue. As I understand, you are unable to access Internet Explorer using any of the web browsers.

    1. Which is the antivirus program installed on the computer?
    2. Are you aware of making any changes to the computer prior to the issue?
    3. Are you using any proxy connection?

    Method 1:

Run the network troubleshooter and check if it works.

Follow the steps to run the Network troubleshooter:

    a.       Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.

    b.      Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.

    c.       Now type Network Troubleshooter in the search option.

    d.      Click on Network troubleshooter to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Disable security software temporarily and check.

Disclaimer: If you have to temporarily disable security software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 3:

    Follow these steps:

    Step A:

Boot the computer in Safe mode with networking and check if the issue persists. Follow these steps to start the computer in safe mode.

    a) Press the ‘Windows + C’ key on the keyboard.

    b) Click on settings, more pc settings and then general.

    c) Scroll down to advanced startup, click restart now.

    d) Click on troubleshoot, advanced options, Windows Startup Settings.

    e) Click restart, select safe mode with networking and then press enter.

Note: Restart the computer to start in normal mode.

    Step B:

If the issue does not persists in Safe Mode with Networking then perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts. Follow these steps to start the computer in clean boot.

    Step 1:

    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

    c) Click the ‘Boot’ tab and uncheck ‘Safe Boot’ option.

    d) On the ‘General’ tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

    e) On the ‘Services’ tab, click to select the ‘**Hide all Microsoft services’**check box, and then click ‘Disable all’.

    f) On the ‘Startup’ tab, click ‘Open Task Manager’. In the Task Manager window under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select ‘Disable’.

    g) Click ‘OK’, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

    a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.

    b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.

    c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.

    d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

    Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

    Step 7:

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

    c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click**‘OK’.**

    d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

Hope this information helps. Please reply back with the status so that we could help you further.

Or try this..It worked for me

had the same problem. First, go to IE, click Tools-Internet Options-Advanced. Then scroll down to Security and make sure the Enable Enhanced Protected Mode box is checked. That enabled my Internet Explorer.

    1. Type “cmd” to get the “Command Prompt” to appear.
    2. Right click “Command Prompt” then click on “Run as Administrator”

    · after the command prompt type netsh winsock reset and run

    · after the command prompt type netsh firewall reset and run (this I got from someone else, but my computer required netsh advfirewall reset to work)

    Restart your computer.

After this go up to upper right hand corner, click on the search magnifying glass, typefirewall then click on Settings underneath that. At left click onallow an app through internet firewall then add in the apps you're having trouble with.

I have a similar issue.  Not only can I not connect to the internet, when I trouble shoot I'm told that I have a bad cable or the DNS server is not responding.  But I know it is because I can do everything from my netbook which is on the same WLAN.  I'm also being told that my router (which had worked fine up til now) "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network".  I have Xzel DSL modem connected to a Cisco Linksys E1500 router.  I have Windows 8 running on a Samsung laptop.  Have only had this product since 1/1/13 and each day brings a new problem with the network.  Help!
