How can I send a photo/file in the Messenger app? From what I can see in the SHARE gem and also from the forums it is only possible
to send / share files using email. Is this true or did I miss something?

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community Forums.
You cannot send/receive files using messenger app. This Metro Messages program is it chat across many platforms and adding attachments does not work so far. You can use Mail App instead.
