When connecting  the maxtor ext. hard driver, it says "device driver software was not successfully installed - FAILED".  What do I need to do to be able to access the content on this hard drive?  I am running Windows 7 64-bit.  According to Microsoft website, it is compatible, so why is it not working?

I'm using a brand new HP running Windows 7 home edition 64bit and I ran into the same issue, I have a work around that isn't the best but at least the drive is usable.

I could not get the Maxtor 200g external HHD to work by directly plugging it into the usb port but when I plugged it into a powered USB hub it worked but the transfer rate is pitiful but at least it works

Your issue may simply be a missing driver. There are three ways to solve this:

    1. Install the driver from the CD/DVD that came with the hard drive.
    2. Search the Seagate (the parent company of Maxtor) website for the drivers.
    3. Go to "Devices and Printers".

    -Right-click the unrecognized device

    -Click "Properties"

    -Click the "Hardware" tab

    -Click "Properties"

-(A new window will open) Click "Change Settings".

    -Go to the "Driver" tab

    -Click "Update Driver"

-(A new window will open) Click "Browse my computer for driver software".

-Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".

-Make sure the "Show compatible hardware" box is unchecked.

-Pick a driver that is similar in functionality to the hard drive.

*Note that this method is not guaranteed to work.

Try doing 1 and 2 first; if they fail, move to 3. Good luck!

Have you tried to connect the disk to another computer?

In my experience, Maxtor OneTouch II and III very often fail, so let's hope that hasen't happend.
