Original Title: Can anyone tell me if these errors can be fixed?

My computer is taking 15 minutes or more to come up and then it hangs up occasionally. So someone on the forum suggested posting the errors posted in the event viewer in the last 48 hours. Here they are. There is a lot of info so I hope someone knows what they are saying the problem is and how to fix it.

Thank you,

Tony

The laptop described above, bearing a model of 6730b, was returned to full health with no further occurrences of the '.. error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation' event in Event Viewer!

A time consuming but awesome fix for the home team!

    Tony, et al.,

I had an instance of this error during a Paging operation also and wanted to share with you (and any others) that a '3 Step Scandisk' did not detect and repair the issue.  I am running the '5 Step' (more detailed) Scandisk now which includes Windows (XP) checking for lost Blocks and Clusters and recovering them if possible.

The Scandisk is currently in '(stage 5 of 5)' and has completed 22% of the hard drive volume, so I will see if it all works out.

Prior to this I was having a 'No Boot' issue on the laptop.  Literally the system was hung up all night long!  However, it would Boot into 'Safe Mode' (using the <F8>) key and both files and network resources were accessible from that configuration.  So the laptop was definitely NOT unuseable, it was only having a really bad day.

I removed the 'pagefile.sys' file by setting the Virtual Memory to none and then performed a '3 Step Scandisk' on reboot.

Also my initial thoughts included an idea to update the 'Chipset' and 'Storage' Drivers associated with this model of laptop.  I did locate and download the files from the manufacturer's Drivers and Support site without difficulty.  After installing the Storage Driver and rebooting the laptop, Windows became accessible from an ordinary login (no longer used Safe Mode), so it seemed as though things had improved somewhat.  However, the error during a paging operation message was still being logged, so it looked as though I had to continue on and find more 'parts' to a complete solution.

The hard drive on this laptop is protected with Full Disk Encryption, so there is no way to simply Repair Windows using some of the ordinary and common tools.

I am now at 38% complete on the 5 Step Scandisk and errors were identified in '\WINDOWS\system32\wbem...' file with Bad Clusters effecting the file 'PROT_INS.SYS'

On to other tasks for the moment.

Best wishes to all who read this message.

    ~ K.

    run chkdsk

if you have the recovery console installed on your machine great, run it from there.

if not you can burn a cd of the recovery console:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_xp-performance/disk-defragmenter-has-detected-that-chkdsk-is/397271a9-2417-4261-8fc7-145678b6a876

    read reply from Elder L.

if not then go to start>run>type in  CMD

in command prompt window type in   chkdsk c: /r   then press enter

when prompted type in Y for yes to run at next restart and then restart computer.

Also clear event viewer first, right click on each heading and choose clear all entries,

you can save them if you desire, that way any errors that come up will be after having run checkdisk.

you can view report at Event Viewer, Applications, Winlogon.
