Hello, I have WinXP and Service Pack 3.  I see that my Windows Update will not work.  I have found the error to be:

wuaueng.dll  it gives me an error code when I try to use it in the cmd list of commands.

In my Automatic Updates list in services it looks like this:

Name:                          Description           Status      Status Type     Long On As

Automatic Updates        (blank)                 (blank)       (blank)            (blank)

I have tried this:

net stop WuAuServ

  1. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
  2. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.   (Did it, this& renaming the folder took the name, yet the file still failed)
  3. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

Step 4: Re-register the Windows Update components.

=================

  1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
  2. Run the following commands:

Regsvr32     msxml3.dll  (succeeded)

Regsvr32     wuapi.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     wuaueng.dll (failed, error 0x80070005)

Regsvr32     wucltui.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     wups.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     wuweb.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     qmgr.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     qmgrprxy.dll (succeeded)

Regsvr32     jscript.dll (succeeded)

I am logged in as the Administrator.

How do I fix this issue?

Thank you so very much for your aid. I have been searching for this fix off and on for months.

Dawn :)

The error code 0x80070005 is also described as ACCESS DENIED

This issue can be caused by third-party security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus software.

You can disable or remove them to check the issue.

My guess is Spybot is interferring with Windows Update.

Uninstall Spybot and try WU again.

I tried this (instructions below) and it did not work either.

    Instructions

      • 1

Download a free copy of the wuaueng.dll file (see Resources.) - 2

Right-click the downloaded wuaueng.dll file and click "Copy." Click the "Start" menu and select "My Computer." Double-click the "C:" drive, open the "Windows" folder, open the the "System32" folder, right-click anywhere in a blank space and select "Paste." - 3

Click the "Start" menu, type "Run" into the search box and click "OK." Type "Regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\wuaueng.dll" into the "Run" box and click "OK" to register the DLL. Click "Yes" in the pop-up to confirm the registration.

    I have a wuaueng1.dll  (created 07/11/2011) and a wuaueng.dll (the new one I just downloaded 09/15/2012) in my system32 (I just noticied).

-->Is this something that should be tried? <---

    Per another website message:

You MUST follow these instructions exactly in order otherwise you'll mess up your Windows Update System

    1. Close Internet Explorer
    2. Delete the WebSetup folder at C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
    3. Visit Windows Update, Click "Express"
    4. Check that the WebSetup folder has been restored
    5. Close Internet Explorer

    6. Stop the Automatic Updates Service  (Do NOT disable it!)

    1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 (Different on 64 bit Editions)
    2. Locate wuaueng.dll within the i386 folder, copy it
    3. Paste wuaueng.dll to c:\windows\system32*dllcache* (Overwrite)
    4. Delete wuaueng.dll within C:\Windows\System32 (Windows will restore it almost instantly, no problem --)
    5. Start the Automatic Updates Service [Again]
    6. Visit the Windows Update site
    7. Download the "Newer Version"
    8. Test it...

    Hi Dawn,

Glad that you posted the question in Microsoft Community. I will try and help you get the issue resolved. However before we begin I will need to ask a few questions.

    1.       Do you have any security program installed on the computer?

    2.       When was the last time Windows update worked fine?

    3.       Have you made any recent software or hardware changes on the computer?

Here is an article which talks about the error code. Go through the steps and check if it helps.

Important: There might be some risk of data loss if any files are infected and have to be deleted.

You may also run the FIXIT and check.

Hope this helps and provide us with more information if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.
