Unknown Device - USB error Code 43

Dell XPS m1330 running Win7 Pro 32-bit, service pack 1.

I have had this problem seemingly forever but have been ignoring it, as it doesn't seem to affect the performance of my laptop, but now I'm wondering why it has happened.

I have 7 Intel ICH8 host controllers, a Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse driver, USB Composite Device, USB Mass Storage Device and 7 USB Root Hubs that all seem to work fine, I have no problems using any devices I plug in to the machine, but there is an Unknown Device, with no hardware/device details available, reporting a Code 43.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB drivers, didn't help, in fact it made it worse as it seems to have lost my fingerprint reader (the reader is installed but apparently not connected to anything). There are no new driver updates. I have no idea what the Unknown Device is referring to, other than Port#0002 Hub#0001.

As I said, all external USB ports work fine, and until I tried fixing it, the Fingerprint reader was fine as well, I don't know what else should be on USB, so don't know what to fix.

Any help?

Chris

    Hi,

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Run the fixit from the following Microsoft Fixit article and check if it helps.

Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows:

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/

    Method 2:

Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

And also try unplugging all USB devices one by one and check exactly which device is giving the error.

    Hope the information is helpful.

Thanks for your reply. I have a built-in fingerprint in my laptop and my laptop can not detect it anymore.  This fingerprint does not appear in Safely remove list.

    USB/UNKNOWN

Go to the device manager and right click on the unknown device.

    Select Properties

    Select the Details Tab

From the Properties Pulldown menu, select Hardware ID's

    It should be something like

    "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_E0001458&REV_05"

    Post the result here.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried both the fixit and the troubleshooting methods, each time I get a report saying There is a problem with Unknown Device, and directs me to the properties dialog of the unknown USB device.

All of my external USB ports work fine, and I can't remove anything that might be on an internal USB device.

In the Unknown Device Properties, I see the type is USB controllers, Port #0002, Hub #0001, status: Windows has stopped the device because it has reported problems (Code 43).

Under Details, I see that the hardware Ids is USB/UNKNOWN. The Physical Device Object name is \Device\USBPDO-8. There is some information in the Driver Key, Bus type, etc etc, but it is all meaningless to me, and I don't know if any of it will help in a diagnosis.

    Thanks
