My Windows 7 local disk (C:) is full? (0 bytes free)

Anonymous
2012-11-19T01:01:29+00:00

My local disk (c:) has 0 bytes free out of 261 GB. I am confident I have not used up to 261 Gb.

I barely have anything in this computer.....

So I began to delete my videos and pictures and such, and check the space. The space would

be freed only a little. Then later on, the space would return to 0 bytes.....and I did not even save

anything.

Can anyone please help me?

Do I have a virus or some sort of malware that is taking up my space?

I can't save documents or even download anything because I have no space.....What do I do?

I researched trying to reinstall windows 7 but I'm not that computer savvy so I don't want to risk it.

I do not have the installation cd.

I'm a broke college student and don't want to end up buying all these products....please help me find

the best but cheapest route to fixing this, and I would be full of gratitude! You'd have no idea how happy I would be....

    Hi Chngjdy,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

I’m sorry to know that you are facing issue with free space on the C:\ drive. In order to provide you with a quick resolution, please reply to these questions:

    1.       How many hard drive partitions are there on the computer (number of local drives)?

    2.       Do you receive any prompt or message saying disk is full?

    3.       Do you have any security software installed on the computer?

    4.       Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

However, I’m glad to provide you with these methods which will help you to fix the issue.

Method 1: I would suggest you to run disk cleanup to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space.

    Delete files using Disk Cleanup

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanup

**Method 2:**I would suggest you to clear the temp folders and check if it helps, here are the steps:

    a.       Click Start, type %temp% in the search box and hit enter.

    b.      Press Ctrl key + A, that will select all the contents and delete it.

Once you clear this, follow these steps:

    a.       Click Start, click on Computer.

    b.      Open C drive, go to Temp folder and delete all the contents and check if it helps.

**Method 3:**I would also suggest you to scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Important: While scanning the hard drive if any bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair that sector, any data available on that might be lost.

Hope it helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Thank you very much. I also had this issue and ccleaner was the solution. My C drive had 84 GB of "System - Temporary Files". I was unable to view them (even showing protected files from the system). But, with ccleaner, I could finally delete them.

    Hi Imran M,

    To answer your questions,

    1.       I have two local hard drives: Local Disk (C:) and Local Disk (D:)

My Local Disk (D:) Seems to store my backups and it has 45.6 GB out of 189 GB free still. It is my Local Disk (C:) that has 0 bytes out of 261 GB.

    2.       I receive messages when I want to view an image on my computer, saying "Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again" or if I try to download anything the download bar would say "disk full" and will not download.

    3.      The only security software installed is AVG Free 2012 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I clicked on AVG and it still works but it cannot update itself because of no memory. Also, it seems that it cannot delete the 6 threats caught because of possible need of memory to delete it or vault it. Also I clicked on my Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program and it cannot be located, so I am guessing that has to be re-installed....though I pretty much cannot install anything on my computer right now with no memory.

    4.      I haven't made any changes to this computer.

Method 1 : I ran disk cleanup, didn't do much or anything. Went back to no memory all of a sudden.

Method 2: I deleted it but still 0 bytes.

Method 3: I cannot download the Microsoft scanner because I have no memory to download any programs or anything; the computer will not allow me. I do not know how to run it without downloading the program.

I hope you can still help me figure out what may be wrong....

Thank you for answering back to me!

Please reply back as soon as possible!

    Thank you for your time!
