PART ONE: A FEW FINAL COMMENTS

Since you did a clean install of WinXP, the McAfee free-trial is no longer a concern here.

The only way you could have successfully "transferred" the Outlook Express data to Outlook 2007 (i.e., on the Desktop computer) would be via Importing the data into Outlook. If you attempted to Exportthe data from Outlook Express to Outlook [yes, there's a difference], that may explain the orphaned Tasks.pst.tmp file (which you can just delete to the Recycle Bin, if possible).

Moving on (which I must do also after posting this reply)...

    PART TWO: SUGGESTIONS

OPTION A: Residents of North America (US & CA), the UK (and perhaps other regions now) may obtain Microsoft-sponsored Premium (i.e., paid) Support via the Answer Desk => http://answerdesk.microsoftstore.com [1] [2]

OPTION B (Recommended): Chances are you're seeing the effects of a longstanding hijackware infection, most-likely "inherited" from the Desktop PC - and possibly compounded by a W32/Alureon-variant rootkit infection!  See...

       • Cleaning a Compromised System

          http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc700813.aspx

If you need additional assistance with the clean install of WinXP, you can begin your own, new thread in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system

If the procedure is outside of your technical "comfort zone" - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the computer to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not a "BigBoxStore" or the Geek Squad!) computer repair shop & let them do the work.

Note: IMHO the computer should NOT be connected to the internet or any local networks (i.e., other computers) in its current state. All of your personal data (e.g., online banking & credit-card passwords) should be considered at-risk, if not already compromised.

Wish I'd had better news for you.  Good luck!

I have nothing further to contribute to this discussion so I'm no longer monitoring your thread. Over & out...

    PA Bear:

Here are some more answers to your questions:

    1. Yes.
    2. No.  I removed Macafee very early in the life of my laptop.
    3. a Yes...I installed AVG Free. b.  I uninstalled AVG Free, but not ALL of it (In my Add/Remove program, it still had a presence.) c. Yes, I installed MSE. d.  Correct, couldn't unisnstal MSE until I was made aware of the removal tool. e. AVG is installed now, correct.

4a. I recently installed (Late November) AVG.

4b. AVG Free is currently installed.  Note:  That in November, I installed AVG, but the TRIAL version, not the FREE version.  This was my error.  So in December, I removed AVG TRIAL and installed AVG FREE.  (Too many Upgrade reminders!!!)

    1. No it isn't.

    6. My search had no results for the Igdkmd32.sys folder**.PS:  Should I go back and replace the checkmarks that I removed, or will that happen automatically?**

One piece of information perhaps I should have mentioned is that prior to transferring my data from my desktop to my laptop, I transferred the data from Outlook Express on my desktop to Outlook 2007 on my desktop.  (I wasn't using Outlook, preferring OX) When I did this a (left-over) file appeared on my desktop (Tasks.pst.tmp).  When I transferred Outlook 2007 to my laptop, this rogue file appeared on my laptop also.  It just sit there and I cannot find a home for it.  I mention this because whenm I was going through the excercise above, I saw thw tasks file in the list.  Don't know if this has any bearing on anything!

I hope all of this helps.  Derek S.

    1. Did the McAfee "promo add-on by Dell" come preinstalled on the Vista computer?
    2. Assuming you used the WinXP CD from Microsoft to "change" the Vista computer to "WinXP Pro" back in 2007, was the McAfee "promo add-on by Dell" still installed after you "changed" it back to "WinXP Pro?"
    3. At some point in the past, (a) AVG Free was installed, (b) you couldn't uninstall AVG Free but nevertheless (c) you then installed MSE, (d) you couldn't uninstall MSE either (i.e., until you discovered the removal tool), and (e) AVG Free is installed now, is that correct?

4a. Did you recently reinstall AVG Free or...?

4b. Is AVG Free 2013 currently installed or...?

    5. Is Security Update for Windows XP (KB2633171) listed in Add/Remove Programs?

6a. Acting on a hunch of mine => Enable Show Hidden Files and Folders per this tutorial => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/#winxp

6b. Open Windows Explorer [WinKey+E] to

        • **C:\WINDOWS**SYSTEM32 <=this folder

6c. Search [CTRL+F] that folder for a file named Igdkmd32.sys [<=you can copy/paste that file name into the Search box to avoid a typo]

6d. If found, right-click on the Igdkmd32.sys file, select PROPERTIES | VERSION (tab) then post that version number (e.g., v8.15.10.2104) in your next reply as your answer for #6.

Robear:  Regarding #6, I confused stopping using MSE, or trying to use MSE, with actauly removing it, which I did earlier this week.

    In response to your questions:

    1.  I was so pissed off at Vista that I contacted Microsoft and expressed my disgust with the system. A VP called back and told me that a CD of OS XP Pro was on its way to me.  The next day he called again and talked me through the changover.

2a. A couple of years back, but I couldn't remove all of it.

    2b.  No, neither were.

    3.  AVG Free is my only anti-virus protection.  No subscription.

4a.  I don't recall a trial period.  I think it was an promo add-on by Dell.

4b. No...just removed Macafee and then installed AVG Free.

    5.  No.

    6a. 12/13/2012  and 12/22/2012

    6b. 03/02/2011

7a. IE8 is my default.  Chrome is instaled; at least until this WordPress plug-in issue is resolved.

7b. It's OK...just OK.  Funny thing is I get notices advising me to upgrdae to IE8 when I'm on IE8, plus some websites ask me to upgrdae to IE8.  So, maybe IE8 isn't working as well as it should.

    8.  Did a M'soft Update/Custom on IE8.  KB2798897 is not offered.  Just the three .NET FRamework updates.

    1. No.

    Hope this helps.

    Many thanks, Derek S.
