My HP laptop with Windows 7 has in the last weeks started having an issue with WINDOWS EXPLORER (not Internet explorer).  How can I either repair or uninstall/reinstall the function?    Presently, it freezes a couple of times a day.

I do appreciate the help. Here is some additional info that you requested:

    1. It is an hp Pavilion dv7 with Windows 7 premium 64 bit
    2. I have McAfee Antivirus plus
    3. No changes that I am aware of except I did uninstall the last Java when the security issue was made public and installed the newest version
    4. Windows7 was pre-installed on my PC by HP.

I did do the SFC scan last week, with nothing found to repair

I will try your suggestions and let you know.

Thank you very much for such a fast detailed response.

    Hi Chris,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question. I see that you are facing issues with Windows Explorer. Let me help you with the issue.

    1.      What is the model number of the computer?

    2.      Which security software is installed on the computer?

    3.      Did you make any changes to the computer recently?

    4.      How was Windows 7 installed on the computer?

In order to troubleshoot this issue, let us try these methods:

    Method 1.

Boot the computer in safe mode and check if this helps.

Advanced startup options (including safe mode): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

    Method 2.

Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is virus free.

    Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Safety Scanner Disclaimer: There could be a loss of data while performing a scan using Microsoft safety scanner to eliminate virus if any.

    Method 3.

I would suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if that helps. The SFC /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

For more information how to do SFC/ scan, please follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

I hope the above step helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Windows related issue let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
