Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

Hi! I bought a Lenovo computer less than a month ago with Windows 8 pre-installed in it. It was working fine but suddenly the two-finger scrolling of the touchpad stopped working. When I go to "Change mouse settings" this error message appears:

"Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver.

If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing device Driver please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking the Yes button. You then need to install your pointing device driver for your external device again"

I didn't install any new device. The only thing I installed was a dynamic dock for the desktop.

The error is not constant. Sometimes the scrolling works again, and the suddenly stops and the error message appears again.

Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Noelia

    Hi Noelia,

Thank you for posting the query in Microsoft Community Forums.

I would suggest you to try troubleshooting the issue.

Method 1: Run hardware and device troubleshooter.

Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

    a. Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.

    b. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.

    c. Now type Hardware Troubleshooter in the search option.

Click on Hardware troubleshooter to run the troubleshooter

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to uninstall the software from programs and features and then try to open mouse properties and check if you are able to open mouse properties then, I would suggest you to uninstall the drivers that are installed on the system in device manager and then download the drivers from the link mentioned below and check whether the issue is resolved.

    Dear Microsoft

I have the exact same issue with my Lenovo U410 (Win 8 64-bit). In addition to this, I have had issues trying to install and make use of Windows 8 apps. I sincerely hope that you will reply, seeing as how this question has gone unanswered.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Faithfully,

    René Skov

Yup, also in the Netherlands this problem occurs with a Lenovo U410. It appears the system resets to default. The only thing I did or changed to the system was installing a mouse. So there is a new "pointing device". I don't like to uninstall a entire synaptics driver for the fact I coupled and then de-coupled a mouse. What to do, where to look?

Edit, here is the specific link to Lenovo U410 Synaptics touchpad driver, latest version 10-10-2013. http://support.lenovo.com/en\_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031456

Thanks in advance and with kind regards, Eise

ok, it actually started failing again but I noticed something: it only fails when I try to scroll in an internet navigator (either Firefox or IE). It works fine when I'm using it in MS Word. Synaptics support says I should re-install the driver, which I already did.

    Any idea?

    Thanks!!

I re-installed the software and now it works just fine :)

A comment though: I couldn't download the correct driver straight from the link you provided. I had to go to this section

    http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers/oem\_support

which forwarded me to a brand-specific site which had the exact software I needed for my specific laptop. Maybe you could point that out in future posts :)

    Thanks again!

    Noelia
