Canon Selphy CP800 Photo Printer appears as "Unknown Device", not as a printer.

I am a Microosft Surface runing Windows RT. I just bought a Canon Selphy CP800 Photo Printer. It is on the Windows 8/Windows RT compatibility list.

This printer IS autodiscovered, but appears as an "Unknown Device", not as a printers. Consequently, I cannot send pictures to it from th e"Photos" app.

BTW, I have a laptop running Windows 8 Pro as well. The same thing happens there.

Any ideas?

I installed the canon driver for windows7 x64 on my windows 8 pro and it actually worked, that I printed with it successfully.

    What was done are

    1. Download the driver cp800w764 from canon site
    2. right click on the file and run the troubleshooter
    3. You get to a point were you specify that it worked with windows 7
    4. Apply the changes and run the driver.
    5. I did not plug the printer until the driver install specify that I should plug in my device.

Hope this help many that are yet to install the driver.

Sorry, but my CP800 still installed with the drivers from Windows update and still working well.

Of course the drivers from Canon CD  don't work , but if you try to find at Windows update, the things become working. For sure worked for Windows 8 x64.

Windows update has all the drivers for Windows 8. I just installed my Canon CP800 without the slightest problem. I am using the 64 bit version.

There are no Windows 8 drivers.

Just updated all drivers on Windows 8 Pro - NONE for CP760 or any other Selphy printer.

This is also confirmed via e-mail from Canon.

Canon also have no idea if and when they will be available - maybe never!

I won't be buying another canon printer - VERY poor service.

I called Canon tech support. Fast response. Very nice. Dumb, but accurate answer.

The tech stated that there are no Windows 8 and Windows RT drivers for these devices yet. When I told him that both the Microsoft and Canon websites listed the printers as being "compatible", he told me that was true. If, in fact, they had drivers, they would work.

Note to self: "Compatible" doesn't mean it works. It means it doesn't NOT work.

No ETA on when drivers will be released. I was told to call back in one week.

Installing the Win7 driver on Win8 Pro works for now, but I ultimately need this to work on RT, and the x86 drivers don't work on RT (ARM).
