I recently got a desktop window 98' from a friend. I attempted to install a wireless device. It didn't install right so I accidently inserted Windows 98 installation disk, and now it's telling me I need a system boot disk of which I don't have. I do have a windows 7 laptop is there any way to get a system boot disk from my laptop or hook my laptop up to the desktop? and reboot that way? PLEASE HELP!!!

I don't know much about computers so any info about getting a disk or fixing it would be helpful. Thank you.

A Windows 98 installation disk is actually a system boot disk.

What do you actually want to do with this ancient Windows 98 machine? Access some files on the hard disk?

You cannot upgrade a Windows 98 machine to Windows 7.

It is extremely unlikely that you can install Windows 7 on a machine that used to run Windows 98. Its processor, memory and disk space would be grossly inadequate.

If you wish to copy user files from the Windows 98 machine to Windows 7 then you have several options:

    • Put the Windows 98 disk into an external USB case, then connect that case to your Windows 7 PC. Could be a little expensive.
    • Save the Windows 98 data to a USB flash disk (if the Windows 98 machine recognises the flash disk . . .).
    • Remove the Windows 98 hard disk, then connect it to the Windows 7 PC (if you have the skills and if the Windows 7 machine has an IDE interface).
    • Get the job done by a technician.

Thanks for answering me. Well I would like to update it to Windows 7 if I could. I have a laptop that I would like to sync it with. So I have one at home and one on the go. I have a wireless device to hook up to the desktop made by Netis a wireless USB adapter. I don't know what to do if I can upgrade the desktop or throw it away. I don't know what other options I have.  Do you have any suggestions for me, I would very much appreciate some help with this. I would like to keep a desktop at home to use. Please if you have any advice. Thank You.
