Original Title: java webstart is not working with windows 8; file opens with notepad instead; cannot associate jnlp file ext. with webstart--what do I do

windows 8 home; java webstart program is part of appinventor installation; attempt to search for an "app" to associate with jnlp file crashes windows explorer and requires reboot of computer.

Goto the Java configuration screen (Control Panal | Java (32-bit|.

Goto the Advanced tab, set JNLP/MIME association to 'Always allow'.

    Thank you for your response.  

    For the benefit of others who may have this problem, I almost gave up, since , as I already knew, methods one and two would not bring up webstart as a possibility. (verified again in response to your message.)  Clicking "find an app" repeatedly crashed the computer, requiring restart by pulling the plug.   I checked that I had java7, upgrade 10, installed, which I did.  Out of desperation, I uninstalled java and reinstalled it. (Even that wasn't easy, as it first it wouldn't execute the java install program on reinstall, but after rebooting the computer the screen came up with a notice that execution was being blocked by windows and I was able to choose to override the block.)  

    After reinstalling java the file association to webstart became possible and I guess the problem has been fixed.

    As per the issue, you are unable to open file ‘jnlp‘extension file using Java web start on the computer.

    I would require some information on this issue:

    1. What is the exact error message while you try to open the file using Java web start on the computer?
    2. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

    Before providiing any suggestions, i would suggest you to check if the default program for the particular file has been set to Java.

    You may follow with the steps:

    Method 1:

    You may refer to the steps to check if it set to Java:

    a) Right click on the file.

    b) Click on Open with option.

    c) Check if you are able to select Java from the list to open the file.

    Method 2:

    You may follow with the link to set default programs as Java for the file:

    Method 3:

    I would also suggest you to refer to the link to install the latest version of Java:
