Schannel Error??

I have a Dell Studio XPS 9100 computer with Windows 7 Prof (SP1). The day after I update my computer with the MS Security Updates for December 2012, I started getting the below errors (averaging about 15 per day) in the event viewer. I suspect it has to do with the MS December update. I did a Google check but could not obtain anything that I either did not understand or could not use. Any help would be very much appreciated, Sam.

    Hi Sam,

Thank you for the reply. As you get these errors continously, try these workaround and check:

Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

Navigate to the following path in the registry editor and change it's value from 1 to 0 and check.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL

    To open registry editor

    a. Click Start, type regedit in the start search box.

    b. Select regedit from the search box and hit enter.

Hope this information helps. Reply us if you have any questions with Windows and we will be glad to assist.

Ravinath P, many thanks for your reply and timely support.

In the registry,  on the right side of the SCHANNEL sub folder, there are two entries, Default and Event Logging.   The Event Logging entrey has the data value of (1).   I assume that this value is what I need to change to (0)??

Am I correct in assuming that this SCHANNEL Error is not of any  signifiance?

    Thanks again, Sam.

The following is in response to your questions -

My IE is Version 9.0.8112.16421 (Update version 9.0.12 (KB2761465)

My MS Security Updates were made on the 12 December 2012 and the Schannel Errors began to appear shortly thereafter on the same day.  No major software changes were made the day before or before the installation of the MS Security Updates.  However, I should mention that there were the daily definition updates for MSE and Malwarebytes Antimalware (Pro) before the December MS Security Updates.

I checked the Advanced Tab for Tools/IE and it had only one "Use TLS1.0" checked and I unchecked it and rebooted.  About forty minutes later I received the Schannel Error and three more later.  It appears that the frequency of the Schannel Error has slowed down a bit.

Later on tonight, will try the " How to optimize Internet Explorer " and see if that helps.  Thanks again for your reply, Sam. ****

Hi Ravinath, tried the " How to optimize Internet Explorer " but unfortunately still no change. Still getting the Schannel Error periodically, appearing approximately thirteen times so far today in the event viewer. Mostly I have been reading my emails with WLM and some web articles but no unusual or unsafe web sites.  I should note that I am current on my MS Security Updates.  Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated, Sam.

    Hi,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

Based on the description provided it looks like the Schannel event error is generated. However, to guide you in the right direction, I will need few more information about this issue to assist you further. Please help me in answering these questions.

    1. Which browser do you use?
    2. Were there any changes made to the computer prior the issue?

    Here are the steps

    Note: Schannel means secure channel.

Schannel uses TLS for security encryption. As long as the sites you visit do not use TLS.

Follow the steps if you use Internet Explorer:

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools.
    3. Click Internet Options.
    4. Click Advanced tab.
    5. Scroll down the list under Security, uncheck all the Use TLS options.
    6. Click OK.

Now restart the computer and check if the issue still occurs.

If the issue persists, then I suggest that you optimize the internet explorer settings on the computer.

Follow the steps in the link below:

    How to optimize Internet Explorer:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213

If the above steps do not help you, then you may try resetting the internet explorer settings on the computer, you may download the Microsoft fix-it from the above link which automatically resets the browser settings to default settings on the computer

Note: The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might reset security settings or privacy settings that you added to the list of Trusted Sites. The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might also reset parental control settings. We recommend that you note these sites before you use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature.

Hope this information helps. If you have any queries related to Windows feel free to post here at Microsoft Community.
