    Hi,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I see that you want to remove highlight box when scrolling the cursor over the icons.

To do so follow these steps:

Look in the Performance Options, as shadowing is controlled there.

    1. Click Start, type advanced into the search box.
    2. Under Control Panel, click View Advanced System Settings.
    3. In the Performance section, click the [Settings] button.
    4. Select the Visual Effects tab.
    5. Uncheck the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop setting.

    Do post the outcome.

If you need any assistance regarding Windows let us know. We will be happy to help.

well that actually got me to a place where i found something else; the 'Use Drop Shadows' fix is mainly for the text highlight problem, but I am interested in the whole icon.  I found the "Use Visual Styles on Windows and Buttons" (at the bottom) which did the trick, but reverted the look of everything back to classic mode.

This is what i have now http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/831/notwanted.gif/

And this is what I would like http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/22/wantedh.gif/

The mouse isnt visible, but it is over the icon.  I just want to get rid of the highlight square around the icon, but keep the look of the windows and buttons.

    thanks for your help!
