Where can I find XP Pro SP1 download/ISO?

Where can I find XP Pro SP1?  I had to re-image my older PC with my licensed copy of XP Pro that came with the Dell PC and need to upgrade to SP3 (eventually).  The download within Microsoft keeps failing from server at http://xpSP1.microsoft.com/isapi/pstream3.dll/xp/SP1.USA.1106a.

Thanks  in advance for anyone's assistance.

Jeff

More info for you, my friend...

In the event you are performing a Clean Install of XP Pro, using a Dell-branded XP Pro Installation CD (at the RTM or SP0 level), you will also need all the correct drivers for this PC. If you want/need the latest drivers, go here to enter your Service Tag number, and you will see what you need:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection

(Actually, it will be more than you need. All you really need are DRIVERS for chipset, network, graphics, and audio)

Or are you running some sort of Restore (from a CD or the hard drive's hidden partition)? If so, you won't need drivers, but you will definitely want to uninstall all the trial programs!

I recommend downloading these (and other needed) files to a USB flash drive.

And here is a link to very detailed instructions on how to perform a Clean Install of XP Pro:

http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm

Be careful! You don't want to wind up wasting your time performing a Parallel Install!!!

And here are tips that always work for me:

  1. Download the installation files for SP2, SP3 and IE8 (beforehand). I prefer to keep these (and other useful files) on a USB flash drive, but that part is optional. Here are the links for all three installation files:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28 (for SP2)

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24 (for SP3)

(You may TOTALLY disregard the "intended for IT Professionals" message!)

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=43 (for IE8)

(You should install IE8 AFTER SP3!!!!!! Trust me.)

And if you need to, also download the installation file for a good antivirus program. I recommend Avira Free Antivirus:

http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

(Avast and MSE are also very good.)

  1. Physically disconnect from the Internet. Also disconnect all unnecessary peripherals.
  2. Temporarily disable Automatic Updates. To do this:

Start | Control Panel (switch to Classic View if not already selected) | Automatic Updates

  1. Install SP2. Reboot TWICE.
  2. Install SP3. Reboot TWICE.
  3. Upgrade to IE8. Reboot TWICE.
  4. Install Antivirus software.

(Very often what happens is someone has their antivirus program running while they are trying to install SP3, which often results in chaos! That is why it should be done AFTER SP3 and IE are installed.)

  1. Make sure Windows firewall is enabled (it should already be):

Start | Control Panel | Security Center

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet. Update Antivirus program.)

  1. Visit Windows Update to download and install only critical security updates. Reboot whenever prompted.
  2. Re-enable Automatic Updates.

Here is a web link to YOUR profile, which includes the threads you participate in:

When you see a post like mine, you should see a message in the lower right-hand corner that says:

"This reply answered my question." And there is a green box to the right of that that says "Mark it."

I assume you pressed that green "Mark it" button while you were reading Srinivas KR's response! Unfortunately, his response is NOT the answer, but others who have a similar problem will waste their time following his advice and link since there is a big green check mark with the word "Answer" next to his post. :-(

In order to unmark it, simply press the green "Unmark it" button that looks like this:

Of course, once you DO get the correct answer -- surely it will be from Tech-Geek and/or me  :-) -- and you want everyone else to know, THEN you can click on the green "Mark it" button. :-)

moving on...

If you are having all these problems with SP1a (and believe me, you are not alone!), simply download and install the SP2 installation file in its place. It may be larger, but it definitely should work.

Here is the direct link for the SP2 .exe file:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28

And here is the direct link for the SP3 .exe file:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

are you saying we dont need sp1 and we can skip right to sp2?

Actually, what my colleague is saying is that you can skip directly to sp3 after you have installed sp1 or sp1a. You do not need to install sp2.

    Daavee,

Thanks for the detailed explanation about unmarking an answer. Also, and more importantly, thanks for the detailed instructions as to how to get out of my PC restore predicament.  I found your instructions spot on with respect to the step sequence and content.

Downloading XP maintenance for SP2, SP3 and IE8 to a USB drive (did this from another PC) and disconnecting the target PC from the internet while upgrading it worked well. Gold star for you on this procedure.

I followed these instructions without a hitch, installed a security package provided by my ISP and voila, my old XP Pro PC is again running XP SP3 and a lot less bloatware from the original manufacturer. IE8 is working well too.

All is well now that my family member has her PC back, wokring like a charm.  Thanks again!!

    Jeff
